Role

Who you are

  • 4+ years of law firm or in-house experience counseling financial services, technology, or digital asset-related clients
  • Highly organized with a bias for action, meticulous attention to detail and ability to produce quality work in a fast paced, high volume work environment
  • Understanding of the regulatory frameworks, existing and proposed, that pertain to various digital assets business models
  • Ability to analyze areas of law, quickly and comprehensively understand the applicable laws, regulations, and guidance (including finding the most current and applicable versions of those laws and regulations), and synthesize research into concise reports or memoranda
  • Ability to apply traditional financial legal concepts to the digital asset space to solution for institutional clients’ complex business needs
  • Experience working in a face paced start up / early stage company - highly motivated, self starter who takes initiative, with a positive attitude and willingness to take on any task (nothing is too big or too small)
  • Ability to think creatively and propose commercial and pragmatic solutions
  • Active membership in a state bar

What the job involves

  • We are seeking an attorney to help advise the Anchor Labs family of businesses on new and existing products and services
  • Through legal research, keeping abreast of regulatory and policy developments, regulatory analysis and interpretation, and assisting with licensing applications, you will use your background in financial regulatory law and passion for the digital assets industry to help us better serve our institutional clients and advance the industry
  • As Regulatory Counsel, you will be an integral member of the legal team, providing strategic, actionable advice to the business lines to develop and launch new products, services, and features across the organization
  • You will identify relevant laws and regulations, advise on regulatory risk, in the areas of banking and financial services laws, securities laws, and nascent regulatory issues related to digital assets
  • Drive informed regulatory decision making with comprehensive legal research and analysis of relevant areas of law, including those related to banking and financial services, securities, and digital assets
  • Contribute to building a repository of legal research and memoranda of law that can be referenced and used to inform legal and regulatory decision making processes for the legal team, business, and other stakeholders
  • Assist the legal team in identifying key areas for further regulatory analysis and providing feedback to the business regarding key legal and regulatory questions
  • Drive work independently while keeping track of progress related to medium-to-large projects and processes
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand business needs and identify key legal and regulatory questions requiring further research and understanding to advance the business
  • Help convey relevant legal issues to internal stakeholders to ensure that knowledge is shared across the appropriate teams
  • Develop clear communication lines and work closely with the legal and business teams to provide relevant regulatory background and analysis
  • Contribute to internal decision making discussions around legal and regulatory questions that arise from within the legal team and the business’s product development efforts

This would mean an impressive expansion of their already substantial domain of influence in a rapidly developing sector.

In early 2021, Anchorage secured a national trust charter from the OCC, making it the first-ever federally chartered digital asset bank. This is significant, as it provides a good barrier to entry for other companies looking to compete in this space, and gives legacy institutions the ability to offer digital asset access to their clients. Though it has raised considerable funding in the past, crypto instability and wider macroeconomic challenges forced Anchorage to cut 20% of its staff in March 2023. 2022 clampdowns on customer due dilligence internal controllers added to the pressure on Anchorage to streamline and refocus its efforts.
