Role
Who you are
- We are looking for people who are passionate about diving deep into the hardware and creating robust and reusable software
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of experience developing real-time embedded software for distributed electro-mechanical systems
- Strong embedded C++/C programming experience
- Strong experience with micro-controllers and/or microprocessors (ARM, PowerPC)
- Experience with real-time operating systems on embedded systems (POSIX, QNX, FreeRTOS, etc.)
- Deep understanding of networking principles and/or time sync protocols
Desirable
- Experience with automotive communication protocols and stacks (CAN, LIN, ethernet, UDS, etc.)
- Familiarity with high assurance development practices and tools (Polarion, ISO-26262, MISRA C/C++, etc.)
- Ability to read and provide feedback on PCB schematics
What the job involves
- Zoox is looking for a Senior embedded software engineer to join our Firmware Platforms team
- In this role, you will be responsible for developing, extending, and maintaining support for multiple embedded platforms for the Zoox vehicle
- You will work closely with electrical engineers, embedded software engineers, and validation engineers to enable support for new advanced platforms and accelerate application development across multiple projects
- Architect, develop, debug, optimize, review, and test software for multiple real-time embedded platforms
- Develop and maintain board support packages for multiple platforms, including compiler, bootloader, drivers, and real-time operating system
- Build low-level frameworks, interfaces, and infrastructure to make our embedded application development faster, simpler, more portable, and more testable
- Bringup of new embedded platforms by working with electrical engineers, suppliers, and vendors to identify and solve hardware and low-level software issues
- Contribute to all phases of the software development cycle including prototyping, requirements capture, design, implementation, and validation
Our take
Zoox, a self-driving vehicle company, was founded to make personal transportation safer and more enjoyable for all. It has aimed to achieve this goal by creating a new mode of driverless transportation, thus eradicating the safety and logistical issues that come with human drivers.
It revealed its custom vehicle design in December 2020, showcasing something different from just a car without a driver. Uniquely, all four wheels are independent of one another, and the vehicles have no front or back, making them more agile than a standard car. Zoox claims that it is different from other industry players because it has created an entire driverless ecosystem, including the vehicle itself, allowing it to have more control.
The company is fast becoming a major player in an industry that is predicted to be worth $2 trillion by 2030. Electric motors are highly desirable, particularly in an urban environment, as governments look for ways to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Zoox is aiming to play a vital role in this evolution towards more sustainable urban mobility. Amazon acquired the company in 2020 and, despite a general downturn in the sector through 2022, is building a Zoox factory and budgeting $1 billion per year for future development and production.
