Who you are
- As a senior contributor in a tight engineering org of 8, you’ll have a lot of influence and responsibility in the business, and be a senior stakeholder for many of our most important projects
- An enthusiast! Someone who loves building stuff that delivers value to customers:
- When push comes to shove, you love building great products and putting them in real peoples’ hands (and overcoming all of the obstacles along the way)
- Focus is gold dust for engineering teams; 80% of execution issues come from the lack of it. In your work as an engineer, you've understood the numbers you are trying to move and have focused on moving them
- Understanding the business impact of your work has enabled you to make solid architectural decisions as you scale
- A technical expert:
- You have real depth in web based technologies and architecture, especially backend skills. You’ll be strong on relational data modelling and API design and will be comfortable managing technical debt and ambiguous requirements
- You enjoy the energy that comes from shipping, and understand the tooling that allows you to do that safely
- Our stack is mostly written in Javascript with Node.js and React, and PostgreSQL on the backend. Ideally you’ll be familiar with those but if not we expect you’ll enjoy picking it up
- A great communicator:
- We work in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver amazing results. Teamwork is essential and great comms are a huge part of that
- You’ll be someone who can communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical people in a way that enables them to understand the tradeoffs
- You’ll probably also enjoy mentoring and teaching more junior developers
What the job involves
- This is a fantastic opportunity to join a lean, dedicated, high performing team as a senior engineer - working to inform strategy, own much of our backend infrastructure, and make a real difference to our customers. Not for the faint hearted!
- You’ll report into Michael Hefferan (VP Engineering) and work closely with Matt Morgan (Funerals Product Director) and the rest of our funerals product team
- Over the next year, you will focus on:
- Improving and evolving our award-winning funerals and funeral plans products
- Building industry leading internal tooling for our customer-facing teams
- Evolving our membership propositions, making all our customers aware of our product suite

Our take
In the UK, the majority of wills and probates are made by solicitors or will-writing firms. However, these are often extremely expensive and not affordable for most people.
A growing number of DIY will services have popped up over the last few years, but most have poor user experience and no real support beyond the form itself. Customers are required to read 10-20 pages of legal documents and decide what applies to them. Farewill's technology asks simple questions and generates legal text. Wills are important legal documents, and so each will is still checked by a specialist. Customers to date have raised hundreds of millions of pounds in charity by leaving a gift in their will.
A competitor in the US (Willing) has taken the freemium route, referring customers to funeral services to make money. However, Farewill believes it can provide a better experience if the product is paid for. Farewell is also partnering with UK companies to provide the service as a perk to their employees, a novel distribution method.
Since launching in 2015, the company has also delved into funeral services. By blending smart technology, Farewill prides itself in dealing with all aspects of death and is committed to making this process faster and fairer for people all over the UK.
