Our take

Home Chef is a subscription-based meal kit delivery service. Customers select from a menu of dishes available on a weekly basis, and receive pre-portioned ingredients delivered straight to their door. It's a model that's been successfully replicated by brands like Hello Fresh, Blue Apron and Gousto.

The business markets its subscription service to busy city workers and families, with a specific focus on simple cooking. After rapidly securing two rounds of investment in 2016, the business was purchased by Kroger in 2018 for $200 million. Whilst it continues to operate as a standalone concern, its meal kits are now stocked in Walmart and Krogers stores.
