Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience working with relational database concepts, storage systems, and architectures
- Advanced level of experience with Postgres, MySQL, SQL, and MongoDB database administration and replication topologies at scale
- Experience working with AWS cloud databases such as RDS, Aurora, ElasticCache, MongoDB Atlas, and AWS S3
- Solid people skills and ability to guide software engineers through database best practices with regard to security, schema design, and migrations at scale
- Experience working with Infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and Terragrunt
- An automation mindset that strives to reduce manual interventions wherever relevant
- Nice to have: GitLab, GitHub gh-ost, automation tooling knowledge
What the job involves
- As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer at Checkr, you will be primarily responsible for managing cloud database and data storage infrastructure, backup policies and processes, data lifecycle management, and performance tuning and troubleshooting across a breadth of database platforms
- Beyond this, you will help our software teams maximize their understanding and efficient use of our database systems
- Design and recommend database architectures that address resiliency, durability, and high availability concerns
- Provision and administer database and database-adjacent cloud resources using Infrastructure as Code
- Maintain and troubleshoot database systems in production, staging, and sandbox environments
- Optimize database performance at the query, schema, and instance levels
- Embrace and extend BCDR and data protection practices across availability zones, accounts, and providers
- Work closely with the Infrastructure team to align on infrastructure best practices
- Implement security best practices for data stores
- Automate common database tasks to reduce toil
- Work closely with the SRE team and improve observability (alerting, metrics, monitoring) of the database schema and infrastructure
- Take part in incident response, diagnosis, and follow-up on system outages or alerts across Checkr’s customer-serving infrastructure
Our take
Checkr addresses the unpleasant and time consuming process of background checks so that companies using on-demand employees can make safer, more informed hiring decisions in less time. Background checks are a critical part of the hiring process, and CEO Daniel Yannisse noticed that they were painfully slow, resulting in loss of work for candidates and productivity downturns for employers.
Before Checkr entered the market in 2014 with its innovative AI technology and a solid $50m in venture capital funding, companies were waiting upwards of two weeks for their checks. Checkr substantially reduces this time frame and has grown to receive a $5 billion valuation.
Checkr has accelerated growth by making several highly advantageous acquisitions of competitor companies GoodHire and Inflection. As the world of work embraces diversity and inclusion, the company announced an end-to-end service for candidates wishing to expunge their criminal records, furthering the company’s ‘fair chance’ mission and clearing 1000s of candidates for free since 2021. New products launched at the end of 2023 include Checkr Pay (providing access to payment right after a shift) and Checkr Onboard (unified onboarding processes), exemplifying how Checkr is keeping pace with a rapidly changing, flexible, and mobile-first workforce.
