Who you are
- A PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related fields; or a Master’s degree in Computer, Electrical Engineering or related fields with 3 years of experience in speech recognition, speech processing, natural language processing
Desirable
- A PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related fields
- Specialization in speech recognition, natural language processing, or audio signal processing is highly desirable
- Prior experience in developing large-scale speech recognition systems for real-world applications
- Have strong ability to identify challenges in speech recognition and propose solutions or improvements to existing methods
- Strong programming skills in Python, and ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and experience with speech recognition toolkits and libraries such as Kaldi/k2, ESPnet, TorchAudio
- Demonstrate strong collaboration and communication skills
- Have a solid understanding and scientific curiosity to learn state-of-the-art speech technologies
What the job involves
- The team is responsible for developing state-of-the-art solutions, including automatic speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speeech (TTS), speaker diarization, language identification and more
- We are seeking a machine learning researcher/engineer, with a solid background in speech recognition and speech processing
- Developing and deploying state-of-the-art models for speech recognition to Zoom’s products
- Collaborating with cross-functional units to improve production speech recognition models
- Devising novel speech technologies and publishing research findings in major conferences/ journals
Our take
Zoom reworked video conferencing when most people assumed it was a solved problem, with services from Cisco and Skype already ubiquitous in workplaces and homes. However, its videoconferencing infrastructure was simpler to use, faster and more flexible than any previous solution, and it swiftly took the world by storm.
Its success bred competition, however, and companies such as Microsoft and Google, along with numerous smaller communications firms, have begun making inroads on Zoom's formerly commanding lead. Additionally, as workplaces are mostly adopting a hybrid or flexible working strategy, some of its importance as a workplace tool is wearing off and it is recording a gradual decline in daily usage rates.
To counter these trends, Zoom is expanding its business offerings through product development and strategic acquisitions. Alongside many other large tech companies, it has battled through a difficult economic situation, but it nonetheless remains a profitable company and household name. Plus, its track record of innovation means it is still very much one to watch in the communications space.
