Who you are
- A high-performing engineer with 6+ years experience delivering end to end solutions that drive business growth
- An exceptional problem solver
- You are a strong programmer with modern web stacks such as React + Rails, Python/Django, or Node/Express. We use Rails, and you should be excited to pick up a new one if it's not already in your repertoire
- Able to deliver elegant, effective software solutions in a timely manner

- Passionate about making measurable improvements for our customers, and using data to drive growth
- You are experienced in incorporating AI tools into daily software development practices, including code generation, automated testing, and rapid prototyping to enhance development velocity and code quality
What the job involves
- Babylist is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Registry engineering team
- This team is responsible for the end-to-end experience of building and sharing users’ Babylist registry, a product used and loved by millions of parents and gift givers
- Product areas include product recommendations, baby shower kits, third party order tracking, and other registry management tools
- You’ll work closely with Product, Design and other stakeholders to design and build new features and experiences for our registrants
- Provide thought leadership around process, tooling, systems, and software architecture. We benefit by more knowledge and learning how others solve problems. You will feel excited to bring in new ways of solving problems
- Improve and help maintain existing systems. Friction in the development process slows us down and has a large opportunity cost. You relish the opportunity to improve test coverage and delete thousands of lines of code
- Work closely with product owners to design, implement and deploy systems to support and scale user shopping experiences, research and recommendation, personalizing and extending the Registry experience
- Working in a close, supportive team solving real-world problems and making decisions
- Mentoring other team members through design and architecture planning, code reviews, and knowledge-sharing sessions
- Identifying opportunities for new product initiatives founded on your knowledge of the technical landscape and web platform capabilities

Our take
Since its 2011 launch, Babylist has grown into one of the most highly rated baby registries in the US. The difference it offers is that it allows users to include products from any store in their registries. On top of this, the company’s model also focuses heavily on creating informational content, which allows it to generate ad revenue while building customer loyalty.
Originally scaled with fairly low venture funding, Babylist claims half of new parents in the US now use its services. This, given that the baby products industry is worth close to $90 billion, shows the immense growth of the company as well as speaking to the impact it has made in the space.
Babylist has seen strong funding in the past which fuelled projects such as the launch of virtual showrooms, and facilitated the company's expansion further into the market. The company acquired Expectful, a health and wellness tool, in 2023 with the long-term vision to combine the companies into a larger health and wellness media property, that can help people navigate all parts of parenthood from fertility to diapers.
