Who you are
- Proven Senior Engineering Leadership: Extensive experience (10+ years) in software engineering, with at least 5+ years in senior leadership roles (Director, Sr. Director, VP, or CTO). You have led large engineering organizations (100+ engineers) and multiple managers, ideally in a high-growth or at-scale tech company
- Strategic Technology Visionary: Demonstrated ability to define and drive a technology strategy aligned with business goals. Experience overseeing architecture for complex, scalable consumer-facing systems is required. You can balance long-term innovation with short-term delivery needs, and make pragmatic decisions that advance the tech vision incrementally
- Scaling and Delivery Track Record: A strong track record of delivering scalable, reliable software platforms and continuous product delivery. Familiarity with handling high-traffic, high-volume platforms (e.g. e-commerce, digital consumer products) is highly desirable. Experience with systems that operate globally or across multiple markets/brands is a plus
- Cloud-Native & DevOps Expertise: Deep knowledge of modern cloud technologies and DevOps practices. Experience with AWS cloud services in a production environment is required, and ideally familiarity with serverless architectures, microservices, and cloud infrastructure at scale . You have driven adoption of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and infrastructure-as-code. Security and reliability best practices (monitoring, alerting, SRE principles) are second nature to you
- People Leadership & Organizational Development: Exceptional leadership skills in growing and nurturing engineering teams. You have hired top talent and built diverse, inclusive teams. Proven ability to mentor and develop engineering managers and senior technical leaders (e.g. Principal Engineers). You excel at managing performance, setting clear goals, and fostering an environment where engineers thrive and produce their best work
- Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication: Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills at the executive level. You’re adept at working in close partnership with product management and other functions – influencing and collaborating to achieve shared goals. Able to communicate complex technical concepts in simple terms to non-technical executives and build trust with senior stakeholders
- Innovative Mindset: Passion for staying up-to-date with emerging technologies (such as AI/ML, personalization, data analytics) and figuring out how to pragmatically apply them for business value. You combine a creative, innovative mindset with strong judgement on what will enhance customer experience versus what is overhyped
- Results-Driven and Accountable: Data-driven decision-maker with a focus on outcomes. Comfortable owning large budgets and ensuring ROI on technology investments. You take accountability for the success of your teams and the systems you own, and have a bias for action in solving problems or removing roadblocks
- Domain Experience (Bonus): Experience in e-commerce, digital retail, or a similar consumer internet industry is a plus. Understanding of fulfillment/logistics systems or payments is beneficial. Most importantly, you should be excited by Moonpig’s mission of leveraging technology to deliver heartfelt, personalized customer experiences at scale
What the job involves
- As Vice President of Engineering for Moonpig, you will be the single executive leader for all engineering teams across the Moonpig Group
- This is a strategic and high-impact role reporting directly to the Chief Product & Technology Officer (CPTO), and working closely with the VP of Product, CEO, and other senior leaders to align technology initiatives with business objectives
- The VP of Engineering will drive Moonpig’s technology vision and execution across the entire customer journey – from our consumer-facing website and apps, through fulfilment and logistics systems, to the underlying platform and infrastructure
- In this role, you will oversee an engineering organization of approximately 120 engineers (including several Engineering Directors/Managers and Principal Engineers) responsible for all aspects of Moonpig’s technology
- You will have full ownership of a ~£20 million annual engineering budget, making key decisions on technology investments and resource allocation in a cost-conscious environment
- Moonpig’s tech stack is fully cloud-native on Amazon Web Services (AWS), leveraging modern serverless architecture to deliver a highly scalable and resilient platform
- As VP of Engineering, you will ensure that our cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines enable fast delivery of new features without compromising stability or security
- Technology Vision & Strategy: Define and own the multi-year engineering strategy and technical vision for Moonpig Group. Ensure our technology roadmap supports the company’s business goals and international growth, leveraging the latest innovations (cloud, AI, etc.) to keep Moonpig at the forefront of personalized e-commerce. Develop architecture plans that scale globally while accommodating local market nuances and brand differences
- Engineering Execution & Delivery: Drive execution of technology initiatives with a focus on delivery velocity and quality. Champion agile methodologies and data-driven decision making to continuously improve our development process. Ensure teams are shipping new features and improvements rapidly, achieving fast time-to-market for innovations that delight customers . At the same time, maintain a high bar for system reliability, security, and performance – our platform must handle seasonal traffic spikes (e.g. Valentine’s Day, Christmas) flawlessly
- Platform Scalability & Resilience: Oversee our platform and infrastructure teams to guarantee that Moonpig’s systems are highly scalable, resilient, and available. Continue to evolve our AWS cloud-native architecture, including serverless services and microservices, to meet growing demand and new product capabilities. Ensure robust DevOps practices, monitoring, and incident response processes are in place to uphold world-class uptime and fast recovery from any issues
- Engineering Excellence & Best Practices: Foster a culture of engineering excellence across all teams. Implement and uphold modern best practices in software development and operations – including continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD), automated testing, DevSecOps, and agile delivery. Champion technical excellence such as clean architecture, code quality, and knowledge sharing. Continuously assess and refine development processes and tools to improve efficiency and developer experience
- Leadership of High-Performing Teams: Attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent in a highly competitive market. Inspire and mentor engineering managers and principal engineers, developing the next generation of engineering leaders. Build diverse and inclusive teams where everyone can do their best work. Set clear performance goals, provide regular feedback, and create a culture of innovation, ownership, and continuous improvement
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work in close partnership with peer leaders in Product, Data, Design, Commercial, and Marketing to deliver cohesive customer experiences and business outcomes. Ensure tight alignment between product roadmaps and engineering execution – jointly prioritizing initiatives, balancing technical needs with product features. Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between engineers and other departments, fostering a one-team mentality
- Stakeholder Management: Act as the key point of contact for engineering at the executive level. Communicate engineering plans, progress, and challenges in clear business terms to the CEO, Board, and other stakeholders. Set the right expectations and influence decision-making at the top of the organization. Provide thought leadership and trusted technical advice to inform Moonpig’s overall strategy
- Budget & Operational Management: Manage the engineering budget (~£20M) and resource planning. Make data-driven decisions on build vs. buy, vendor choices, and where to focus investments for maximum ROI. Ensure that engineering operates efficiently within budget, optimizing cloud infrastructure spend and team resources while continuing to meet business needs. Drive a cost-conscious mindset in the team, especially given broader macroeconomic considerations

When Moonpig was founded in 2000, it bought into the idea that a personalised gift is always more meaningful, whether sent from the sofa, the commute, or the gym. Customers quickly bought into this vision, and Moonpig saw rapid growth culminating in its 2011 acquisition by Photobox for £120M.
