Who you are

Our technology stack on the Database Platform team: MySQL (Percona), Chef, Ubuntu, Ruby, Golang, Kubernetes, Google Cloud Platform
This role will be a development role as so proficiency in common backend languages is required. Experience with the exact components of our stack is a nice-to-have, but not necessary - the only requirement is the willingness and enthusiasm to learn them
Experience or interest in configuration management
Ease working in the Linux shell
A background in Site Reliability Engineering/Production Engineering/System Administration or a software developer/QA interested in infrastructure work
Prior database reliability engineering/DBA experience (particularly in MySQL) is a strong plus
Prior experience with Vitess is a strong plus
Prior experience with a cloud platform (e.g. AWS, GCP, IBM Cloud) is a plus
A strong reliability mindset is required

What the job involves

We’re looking for a Staff Engineer to join the Database Platform team at Shopify, responsible for one of the largest MySQL deployments in the world
Work on applications and scripts that support the reliability of our database infrastructure, such as:
Our backup system (e.g. snapshots, backup verifications)
Our self-healing tool, Mason
Configuration management tools (we use Chef and KateSQL)
Vitess for sharding
Third-party tools such as Orchestrator and ProxySQL
Internal scripts for managing our fleet
Be a part of our 24x7 on-call rotation. This involves:
Protecting the integrity of our merchants’ data
Working together with the rest of engineering to resolve incidents
Taking your allocated lieu/rest time after on-call shifts
Ensure proper monitoring and alerting of our systems
Maintaining existing documentation and documenting new processes

Our take

Prior to Shopify, eCommerce solutions for online businesses were a pretty ramshackle affair, either picked from a poor selection of expensive off-the-shelf products or developed in-house. Shopify was born from its founder's frustration in setting up a store to sell snowboards online. Since then it has grown into the world's biggest eCommerce platform, with over 1 million active merchants using the platform to sell almost anything imaginable over the internet.

Today Shopify has a commanding lead among eCommerce platforms, though it may be threatened by the rapid growth of its rival WooCommerce, which is popular in online stores built using WordPress. However Shopify has made moves to stay ahead of the competition, developing new products such as Shopify Collabs which makes it easier for influencers to collaborate with brands, and offering financing services to eligible merchants to support their business growth.

Shopify has enjoyed strong growth in the years since its IPO, achieving more than 26% revenue growth compared to 2022 in 2023 alone, driven by the continuing shift to online shopping and the improved capabilities of the platform. It will be looking to build on this growth by continuing to develop its range of products and making further strategic acquisitions to support its platform.
