Role
Who you are
- You have experience working in PHP, Python or another object oriented language
- A strong understanding of relational databases. We use MySQL and BigQuery but any other flavor of SQL is ok
- Experience as a full stack engineer with the ability to write understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability and observability. Our work is more backend-focused but a familiarity with the frontend is extremely useful for identifying risks to delivery of ads
- Experience defining and solving unconstrained problems and know when to seek help with any roadblocks
- You have an analytical mindset and enjoy solving problems that involve recognizing patterns and finding solutions applying data
- You have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality and are willing to work with and improve on code written by others
- You have a mindful, transparent, and communicative approach as a member of your team
What the job involves
- You will work with the other engineers and analysts on the squad to ensure we have the right tools and methods to deliver ads safely and consistently across platforms and devices
- You will work on challenging engineering problems such as:
- How do we ensure dynamic delivery of millions of ads in a matter of milliseconds?
- How do we allow product teams to move fast while ensuring consistent Ad quality across multiple pages, platforms and teams?
- How do we gain confidence that we are charging for authentic ad clicks vs inauthentic or bot-driven ad clicks?
- How do we develop the most useful granularity observability and monitoring?
- Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law
Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
