What the job involves
- As Director of Engineering, you will look after an organization spanning across approx. 50 engineers and several teams as they develop and innovate on Spotify’s consumer experience across our richest and largest web-based screen experiences
- Working in collaboration with Product, Insights and Design counterparts, you will define and implement a healthy strategy that improves our reach and impact for the business
- You will also drive impact through Senior Engineering Manager, Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers reports; encouraging the best engineering practices, regularly assessing the technical state and general health of teams, and providing focused mentoring to teams
- This will include helping to ensure that our solutions are scalable, balanced, architecturally sound, and that technical debt is both incurred consciously and repaid in a reasonable time
- Grow and lead skilled and hardworking Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers and Senior Engineering Managers through hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback and hands-on career development
- Be accountable for the technical vision and long-term technology strategy for Spotify’s “off platform” and “on platform” technologies and products that drive growth towards our target of serving 1Bn+ MAU
- Be a technical leader in an autonomous, multi-functional organization and within Spotify in general, supporting timely delivery of technical solutions to address business needs
- Work tightly with your peer product, engineering leaders and teams to set the technical direction, build and communicate strategy, and improve ways of working as a team
- Collaborate with other engineering leaders across Spotify to enable large-scale collaboration on strategies and bets, and enable experiences that build phenomenal audio sessions for Spotify users worldwide
- Enable learning and sharing across the organization, leveling up our engineering practices and mentoring other specialists
- Work directly with suppliers and partners to influence technical platforms and decisions, and initiate and drive technical projects across teams within Spotify
- Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices and help develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices
- Create a safe and inclusive working atmosphere and grow a healthy set of collaborative engineering practices in line with what we value

Spotify was founded in an attempt to combat the rampant music piracy that was causing significant harm to the industry. The company has since taken music streaming mainstream and now has 180m+ paying subscribers across the world.
With features that include a highly accessible interface and a vast catalogue of artists, Spotify's strong brand has been able to maintain growth in spite of fierce competition from deep-pocketed rivals like Amazon and Apple. The company has achieved this by making smart acquisitions to move into other verticals to strengthen its offerings, especially podcasting, by acquiring Gimlet Media, Anchor and Parcast.
