Role
Who you are
- PhD in Computer Science or Statistics (other relevant fields also welcome) or equivalent education and industry experience
- A proven track record of industry experience with applied ML development in a production environment, including modeling unstructured data (e.g., natural language text, images, etc)
- Experience collaborating with globally distributed teams and partners
- Ability to work with relevant data at Etsy scale (at times, in the petabytes)
- Ability with public Cloud technologies for software development (e.g., GCP, AWS, or Azure)
What the job involves
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Content Evaluation, Trust & Safety Engineering
- As the Senior Applied Scientist you will be responsible for building multimodal classification models that automatically evaluate the text, image, and metadata of user generated content on Etsy risks to trust or safety
- This includes being responsible for evaluating and monitoring and improving the performance of these models and systems. In addition, your most impactful and innovative work will be shared internally and externally through blogs and conference papers
- Do you find joy in applying new and advanced machine learning techniques to make e commerce a safer place to transact? If so, this could be the perfect match
- Build novel multimodal machine learning (ML) models to evaluate content for risks to Etsy's members
- Develop a strategy for collecting unbiased (or less biased) training data to ensure our content moderation models have minimal blind spots
- Establish and maintain documentation and code samples on the current "best" way to solve the content moderation challenges that Etsy's marketplace faces
- Work collaboratively with our product and operations partners to prioritize the highest risks and propose technical solutions
- Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law
Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
