Experience with search indexing and retrieval technologies such as Elasticsearch or Solr
Proficiency in backend languages such as Kotlin, Java, Go, or Python
Experience building distributed systems, backend services, or infrastructure
Familiarity with backend APIs and large-scale data pipelines
Experience with frontend development is a bonus
Interest in search infrastructure, ML-powered discovery, or large-scale information retrieval

What the job involves

We’re looking for a backend engineer to help build and operate the infrastructure behind our discovery experience. The ideal candidate is excited to solve high-scale indexing and retrieval challenges. Experience with machine learning is a plus, as we increasingly integrate dense embeddings and hybrid search strategies into our stack
Guide a small team (1-3 engineers) as you architect, build, and maintain high-scale ingestion and indexing pipelines for structured and unstructured data
Own and evolve our indexing and retrieval search stack, from Elasticsearch clusters to vector databases such as Milvus, Pinecone, and Qdrant
Collaborate with data science and ML partners to weave new signals and embeddings into the index
Design and tune retrieval APIs that return lightning-fast, highly relevant results
Push performance boundaries, boosting latency, throughput, and reliability across the discovery serving layer
Advance hybrid retrieval, blending keyword and semantic techniques for the best of both worlds
