Senior Software Engineer, Ginkgo Bioworks

• Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent degrees accepted) or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, or other related fields
• 5+ years of relevant experience in industry
• Experience writing frontend code using React and Typescript
• Demonstrated knowledge of frontend web development best practices
• Experience writing backend code in Python or other object-oriented programming languages
• Knowledge of microservice architecture, deployment patterns, and best practices

• The position is on the Design Center Software team at Ginkgo
• The team comprises Software Engineers, a Product Manager, a Product Designer, and an Engineering Manager
• You will be responsible for building web applications and Python packages biologists use to design DNA and cells
• Over the next year, we anticipate building more end-to-end pieces of functionality that focus on user efficiency and higher throughput to meet the needs of a rapidly growing company

• Demonstrate technical mastery within the team and independently deliver large or complex projects with minimal guidance from management and other team members. This includes all the work needed to define, design, implement, test, and deliver the features into production
• Develop a strong understanding of all of the major components of the team-owned software
• Develop a strong understanding of all the interfaces into and out of the team
• Subject matter expert in one or more areas of the team
• Influence and improve team processes to drive better outcomes
• Mentor and grow less senior engineers
• Scope and deliver complex features
• Coordinate with other teams to deliver interfaces needed to deliver complex features
• Introduce new tools or technologies when they are needed to solve issues
• Help ensure practices are consistently practiced and occasionally reconsidered. Consider all practices from the point of view of efficiency and effectiveness
• Enable and encourage discussion from less senior team members
• Establish productive relationships with adjacent software teams
• Collaborate effectively with customers when addressing complex functional needs
• Act as a Scrum Master on the team when needed
