Who you are
- Proven track record of over 8 years building $XX million in new business through direct IO sales with global brands across categories such as CPG, Consumer Electronics, QSR, Retail, Tech, and Telecommunications
- Ample experience influencing senior leaders at global brands and their agencies to drive new partnerships through new product launches
- Proactive problem-solving mindset, anticipating client needs and concerns while safeguarding the end user experience within the Discord platform
- Intuitive grasp of foundational sales skills, including data analysis to assess campaign performance, escalation strategies, negotiating and structuring non-standard ad-buying agreements, forecasting, and outreach
- Willingness to travel for regional in-person client meetings
- This is a strategic, senior-level individual contributor position, ideal for someone passionate about gaming and excited to establish Discord as a premier marketing tool for gaming-aligned brands
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced Sales Manager to join as a founding member of the new Advertising Solutions (Quests) business line
- In this dynamic, zero-to-one environment, you will be instrumental in building and scaling this fast-growing business line
- You’ll leverage your strategic business expertise, industry relationships, and product knowledge to create a significant and recurring book of business while forging our first partnerships with nonendemic brands
- Generate Revenue: Drive $XX million+ in new revenue across nonendemic categories, including CPG, Telco, Food & Beverage, Financial Services, and Sports Betting. Build and deepen relationships with senior stakeholders at global brands, becoming an expert in their marketing needs
- Internal Strategic Insights: Provide market insights to cross-functional teams, including Product and Product Marketing, to co-develop innovative solutions that align with client objectives and enhance our advertising offerings
- External Thought Leadership: Represent Discord externally with strategic insights and a focus on safeguarding the user experience. Showcase thought leadership in gaming, media, and marketing by engaging with clients, internal teams, and industry events
- Influential Presentations: Create and deliver powerful sales presentations and proposals by leveraging advanced insights from internal and external data sources
- Process Development: Collaborate across the sales organization to establish scalable processes that drive repeatable, predictable business outcomes
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 200M active users in 19M communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and X, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord’s remarkable growth, however, is not without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed giants like Facebook, and regulatory concerns from those worried about the platform’s relatively light chat moderation. However, the company has the resources and expertise to adapt. For example, the acquisition of harassment detection software company Sentropy will go a long way towards placating the concerns of critics, as will the 2024 acquisition of teen app Gas used to give anonymous compliments to friends. All of these purchases are part of Discord's move to expand out of its mostly gaming-focused customer base.
