What the job involves
- As the Senior Product Design Manager for Buyer Web, you will lead the design strategy and execution for Etsy’s desktop and mobile web experiences
- This team crafts how buyers discover, evaluate, and purchase unique items every day — making the shopping journey intuitive, cohesive, and high-performing across platforms
- You’ll guide a team responsible for delivering a consistent, “One Etsy” buyer experience while navigating platform-specific constraints, evolving web architecture, and responsive design systems
- This is a highly collaborative leadership role reporting into Buyer Design leadership and partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Research, Brand, and Design Systems
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Sr. Director of Product Design, Growth
- The Buyer Web team focuses on the heart of the customer journey — discovery, evaluation, and purchase on desktop and mobile web. We work at the intersection of craft and performance, ensuring that Etsy’s marketplace feels inspiring, trustworthy, fast, and seamless
- Product Design Managers at Etsy partner closely with Product Management and Engineering to drive measurable customer and business outcomes
- They are responsible for shaping strategy, elevating craft quality, developing design talent, and aligning collaborators around a clear and actionable product vision
- Lead with Strategy - Define and drive initiative-level design strategies across desktop and mobile web, anticipating platform tradeoffs, technical constraints, and performance considerations while ensuring cohesive buyer experiences
- Bring Clarity to Complexity - Navigate evolving architecture, responsive systems, and shifting priorities. Frame ambiguous problem spaces into clear opportunities grounded in user insights and business goals
- Grow and Support Your Team - Coach designers through complex initiatives and platform migrations. Develop a high-trust, inclusive environment with clear expectations around quality, accessibility, craft excellence, and performance-oriented design
- Champion Craft & Systems Thinking - Partner with Brand and Design Systems to ensure web components are accessible, performant, and scalable across the buyer lifecycle. Drive consistency while enabling innovation
- Collaborate Strategically - Work closely with Product, Engineering, and Research leadership to translate technical considerations into actionable design direction and long-term roadmap alignment
- Drive Measurable Impact - Use qualitative and quantitative insights to improve buyer confidence, conversion, engagement, and overall marketplace performance

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
