Who you are
- If you’re a passionate Machine Learning Engineer, we’re offering you the opportunity to join the diverse team at our Amsterdam HQ and make a real difference in our data-driven, scale-up environment. We are currently seeking talented individuals across various levels of expertise
- Master’s degree or higher in AI, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field
- At least 3 years of experience in data science
- Experience with maintaining production-level ML solutions with solid software engineering and ML principles
- Strong Python and SQL skills
- Superb communication skills and ability to transfer knowledge to business stakeholders and the rest of the data science team
- Comfortable with taking responsibility, showing initiative, and working independently
- Ability to think outside the box and an anything-is-possible mindset

What the job involves
- As a Machine Learning Engineer at Picnic, you’ll work on creating intelligent, automated systems to solve our company’s biggest challenges at scale. You won’t stop at building a model—you’ll productionize it alongside the wide variety of machine learning models we already have running in production
- You will be working together with business leads to identify and solve problems that leverage machine learning
- Your main responsibility will be in taking ownership of and developing the ML models that power what customers directly see: the Picnic store
- You will develop ML solutions that allow customers to easily find the products that they are looking for, out of our considerable and ever-growing assortment
- But also, you will build models that provide inspiration and show customers relevant articles that they might not know about
- Together with the Store team and analysts, you work towards ensuring that the relevant data is being tracked and your recommendations can be evaluated properly
- You're more than a model builder: you’re a blend of internal consultant, software engineer, and applied mathematician
- You might think, “Sounds good, but 80% of my job is going to be cleaning data.” Not here
- Our data is registered, logged, consistent, and immaculate - maintained by our very own Data Engineering team
- We’re a mature team with the infrastructure, tools, and expertise to get models into production
- You will focus on building ML solutions that allow customers to easily and seamlessly explore the store and find exactly what they need. This includes:
- Recommendation systems: generating useful in-app grocery suggestions for our customers
- Search optimization: develop models that improves search results and search conversion, but also mitigates inherent biases
- Ranking systems: ensuring the products are ranked in a personalized way, showing directly relevant items but also allowing for inspiration and serendipity
- Scaling existing systems that power the store currently, with ever increasing data volumes and personalization logic
- Working closely with business leads and analysts to identify opportunities, define business cases, and scope the requirements
- Owning your own project from inception to production to continuous improvement

Picnic is one of Europe's largest online supermarkets, quickly growing into a household name with its simple, yet innovative app and green business model. Thanks to its ‘own the supply chain’ model and daily delivery routes (as opposed to on-demand delivery), the company is able to run a low-cost business targeted at the mass market, rather than premium buyers.
One of the major factors in the company’s rampant growth since 2015 is its capacity for free delivery, enabled by these daily delivery routes. The company's fleet has grown from 4 vans to more than 1,000 electric vehicles, cutting down on carbon emissions as it serves its hundreds of thousands of users.
The company's impressive funding - which has been heavily backed by the likes of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the sum of 1.4 billion euros in funding - has enabled Picnic to expand beyond The Netherlands into Germany, France, and further afield. Picnic is well set to see continued growth and expansion as it further disrupts the grocery delivery market.
