What the job involves
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Payments Compliance & Tax
- We are looking for a Software Engineer II, Payments to tackle practical problems in a strong engineering environment working in collaboration within a multi-functional engineering team
- As the Software Engineer II, Payments you will be contributing at all levels of our application stack, ranging from back-end technologies like PHP, MySQL to front-end web interfaces like JavaScript
- Your role involves you working with database transactions, sharding, replication, performance, stability, metrics, integration resiliency and more!
- Do you find joy in building outstanding products and experiences for both buyers and sellers? If so, this could be the perfect match
- You will build and maintain code responsible for the operation of critical systems that process billions of dollars in payments and require around-the-clock availability
- You will collaborate with other engineers within your team and across Payments to make effective use of our infrastructure and platforms, and also with other product teams that are building on our payments platform
- You will develop integration solutions for vendor products across multiple global initiatives
- You will be supporting the growth and operations of Etsy Payments as an agile and multifaceted product and afford our buyers and sellers the protection they expect. It's an exciting environment with the opportunity to effect change on an Etsy-sized scale!

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
