Role

Who you are

  • Proficient in Javascript/Typescript
  • Experience using a modern javascript framework (ideally React)
  • Proficient with Python
  • Experience with databases and Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks, preferably Django
  • Experience with Docker, both building and running images
  • Experience working in an Agile / Scrum team
  • Comfortable with working outside of your main discipline in order to collaborate across your Scrum team
  • A desire to mentor and support others

What the job involves

  • As a full stack Senior Software Engineer at MPB, you will be responsible for the overall design, development and implementation of front and back-end applications
  • This will include using React to deliver features for our customer facing website and internal back-office applications, building Python services in a service-oriented architecture with communication over gRPC
  • We follow innersource principles for code ownership and contribution

  • We take a cloud native approach to development and infrastructure with lots of room for experimentation and improvement
  • We foster a culture of quality and openness within the team
  • This role is based in our friendly office in Bülowstraße, Berlin, with a team of co-located, skilled engineers and product professionals and forms part of a wider Engineering department with further teams based in our UK office
  • The working language of the team will be English
  • Implement new features in Typescript/Javascript and atomic React component libraries
  • Maintain and extend existing Python web services based on new feature requirements and business needs
  • Collaborate with Product and UX designers to ensure user experience is maintained to a high level of quality
  • Provide insight and input into the design and architecture of end to end systems
  • Contribute to existing features by fixing bugs and adapting to new requirements
  • Collaborate with other Engineers to ensure integrations with APIs are correct and complete

Brighton-based MPB’s used camera and photo equipment marketplace has been going through a period of rapid growth of late, reflecting the European used goods marketplace as a whole.

The company joins the likes of Wallapop (Spain) and Vestiaire Collective (France) in a coterie of second-hand buy & sell platforms that have risen in popularity, and received major funding as a result. While used goods platforms have always been very popular online, MPB and its ilk’s niche market approach is paying off. The public conscience surrounding sustainability and circular economies no doubt plays a role in this.

However, the main factor behind the company's sharp growth may be the rise of online content creators, which has created a greater demand than ever for quality film and photo equipment. With no sign of demand slowing for MPB’s platform, the company is aiming to ramp up operations across its locations in Brighton, Berlin, and Brooklyn, and possibly expand further afield.
