Who you are
- The right candidate is a creative thinker who wants to experiment with new storytelling formats. They should be deeply immersed in shortform video culture and trends and be able to identify new ways for Vox to engage on video platforms like Tiktok, Instagram, and Youtube Shorts
- We want someone who’s not afraid to try new things and learn from them. There are many ways to do an explainer, and this is a role that will require innovation and fresh ideas
- Experience producing and editing shortform vertical videos for platforms such as Tiktok, Instagram Reels, and Youtube Shorts, preferably on newsy topics
- Strong skills in Adobe creative suite (Premiere, AfterEffects, Illustrator)
- Familiarity with vertical video editing tools such as Capcut, Descript
- Awareness of trends on Instagram, Tiktok, and Youtube Shorts
- Deep familiarity with creator video landscape
- Passion for news and Vox’s mission
What the job involves
- Vox is looking for a producer to join our award-winning video team to focus on creating vertical videos, which will live on social platforms and our website
- This person will play a key role in creating innovative shortform, vertical videos for Vox that help us engage with audiences in new ways off-platform, while still staying true to Vox’s explanatory mission
- They will monitor news happenings and platform trends, as well as what’s in the works across the newsroom, and proactively identify opportunities to partner with different Vox journalists to make quick-turn vertical videos in a variety of formats. This person will not just execute on assignments, but pitch ideas and help shape what vertical shortform video can look like at Vox
- Create and edit a steady stream of short-form vertical videos for TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts, and beyond, creating several quick-turn videos a week
- Own the full video process: pitch ideas, record, edit, add captions, occasionally add graphics if needed, optimize for each platform, and hit publish
- Work with journalists from across our newsroom to turn our journalism into smart, timely videos
- Turn around videos quickly when news breaks, and help shape stories that are made for vertical video platforms
- Occasionally jump on camera when it makes sense, bringing your own voice and personality to videos
- Monitor analytics, using performance data to learn what’s working (and what’s not) so we’re learning as we experiment with different formats and approaches
- Handle multiple projects without dropping the ball; this role will require strong organizational skills
- Maintain a loose calendar / pipeline of shortform vertical videos in the pipeline, working with editorial leaders to identify opportunities for videos with our journalists during major news moments
Our take
Whilst magazines and newspapers are not as popular as they once were, digital journalism is alive and well. However, many people feel that digital content is becoming less natural and informative, and instead has become focused on sensationalism and ‘click-bait’ as a means of advertising.
Vox Media publishes media across various digital platforms, focussing on providing insightful and informative journalism through storytelling, commentary, and cultural conversation. Whilst the company's editorial networks are meant for entertainment purposes, they do this through a means that increases awareness and interest of affiliate brands.
Marketing through digital publishing is nothing new, but Vox Media has an interesting perspective by producing content that inspires readers to follow up on a brand, rather than suggesting they do. With numerous acquisitions at its back, and substantial investment to play with, the company will doubtless continue to scale its brands and operations.
