Who you are
- You will thrive in this role if you love to think outside the box; to bend technologies to your will in order to solve novel challenges
- You don’t always need a clearly documented path forward. Instead, you enjoy solving challenging problems from first principles in a clean, elegant, and understandable manner
- You are happy to give and receive feedback to foster growth and common understanding across the team
- Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience and accomplishments (understanding of fundamental data structures, memory management, and algorithms is a must)
- Above-average problem solving skills
- Fundamental knowledge of Audio DSP and/or MIDI
- Proficiency in Swift, C, or Rust, and an understanding of Python or TypeScript
- Proven ability to profile, debug, and systematically improve computational and memory resource usage / performance
- Willingness to learn by doing, think creatively, and work with unproven solutions and/or incomplete knowledge
- Eagerness to learn through a feedback culture and share knowledge with the team
Desirable
- Experience with node.js backend development: GraphQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL
- Experience with frontend development: React, SwiftUI
What the job involves
- At flowkey, Core Technologies is the autonomous research and development team responsible for solving some of the company’s greatest technical and algorithmic challenges
- Real-time polyphonic note detection and score following, recommendation and skill detection systems, and synchronizing video playback with sheet music are just some examples of the areas we work on. These technologies enable flowkey’s award-winning user experiences for millions of piano learners around the world
- As a Software Engineer on the team, you will work to flesh out and productionize elegant technical solutions alongside researchers, technical leadership, and other product teams, ensuring our Core Technologies are usable, performant, and bug free

Our take
Learning to play a musical instrument is more often than not an ambition for many but the expense and logistics of finding a teacher can be off-putting. Flowkey is an app making it easy for users to learn to play the piano. Alongside growing popularity for e-learning, its extensive library of songs to learn and course collections has put the company at the forefront of its space.
Profitable almost immediately after launch, Flowkey founders took part in Die Höhle der Löwen (similar to a German Shark Tank) and partnered with Yamaha. This gave the company great exposure early in its journey and it quickly became one of the global leaders in the market.
Now priding itself on 10 million users worldwide, Flowkey is set within a growing e-learning market and giving competitors like Simply Piano a run for its money.
