Who you are
- 6+ years in product design, with a portfolio demonstrating successful projects from concept to execution
- Strong ability to work quickly and autonomously with a startup mindset, managing projects independently
- Proven competence in working closely with technical teams to translate complex technical capabilities into intuitive user experiences
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and a knack for bringing creative solutions to life
- Strong communication skills, capable of articulating design decisions clearly and persuasively
Desirable
- Previous experience in designing using LLM outputs, an AI-first mindset or designing for other emerging technologies
- A well-rounded design skill set, comfortable working across a broad range of activities from UX/UI to visual design
- A deep understanding of user-centric design principles and interest in user research techniques
- Experience working in or alongside startup environments, embracing ambiguity and rapid changes
What the job involves
- As a Sr. Product Designer II on the Carrot AI team, you will harness the power of artificial intelligence to shape innovative products. Our projects range from consumer applications like AI-powered grocery lists, to developing cutting-edge internal productivity tools for our team
- You will be instrumental in imagining new projects from scratch with the team with the end goal of making a tangible impact on how users engage with this new technology. Guided by a startup mentality, you'll work closely with a senior team including Instacart’s co-founders, embodying innovation and autonomy in every stride
- Join our Carrot AI team, a bold innovation nucleus within Instacart that operates like a startup. We're deeply focused on conceptualizing and nurturing groundbreaking AI projects from the ground up. Here, you'll collaborate in a dynamic, small-team environment, pushing the frontiers of AI technology
- Lead the design process for consumer-facing and internal AI-driven projects
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering and product management, to iterate and deliver impactful design solutions
- Employ a holistic and strategic approach to design, ensuring the user experience aligns with the project’s objectives and our broader company mission
- Innovate constantly, identifying opportunities to leverage AI for enhancing user interaction and operational efficiency
- Balance creativity with practical execution, ensuring designs are both visionary and implementable

Instacart is an online grocery marketplace that operates a pick-up and delivery system in the US and Canada. Unlike standard grocery shopping, Instacart sends a “personal shopper” to your local store to buy your products, who then delivers them straight to your door on the same day via their own car. The company also supplies the Instacart Platform, with services for stores encompassing eCommerce, fulfilment, in-store, ads, and insights.
The increased modernization of society has meant more than ever that consumers are looking to buy their groceries online, making space for apps like Instacart to become daily life staples for years to come. Although the company must compete with other grocery store delivery services, such as Walmart’s own, it has expanded to cover large percentages of US and Canadian households, and is now aligned with over 900 retail banners across more than 75,000 locations.
Instacart's software offerings signify the company's focus on tech, designed to move it away from its dependence on the gig economy. To this end, the company has acquired FoodStorm, an order management system that powers end-to-end order-ahead and catering, integrating its technology into its enterprise suite. Despite an IPO in September 2023, market downturns have necessitated a 7% workforce cut in 2024, focused on middle management and creating a flatter organisational structure. With a new streamlined workforce, here's to hoping Instacart can maintain its momentum.
