What the job involves
- As a Software Engineer in Security Engineering, you’ll play a key role in designing and building highly scalable, globally distributed security infrastructure at Zoom. You’ll contribute to the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) system, ensuring millions of users worldwide can communicate securely
- With eight specialized departments, the engineering team functions as a highly collaborative, diverse powerhouse. Each department mission is to deliver seamless and innovative communication solutions
- These range from software development and machine learning to quality assurance teams that work to create and maintain Zoom's user-friendly interfaces and robust infrastructure
- The team continues to push the boundaries of communication technology, bringing people together regardless of their physical distance
- Building and optimizing large-scale distributed systems that power Zoom’s security features
- Building and maintaining server components for Zoom’s E2EE system, as described in our white paper
- Working with Go, SQL databases, and cloud infrastructure to develop secure, high-performance services
- Collaborating closely with security engineers, cryptographers, and cross-functional teams to enhance security protocols and design new solutions
- Solving complex security challenges, ensuring Zoom’s platform remains resilient, scalable, and secure for all user

Our take
Zoom reworked video conferencing when most people assumed it was a solved problem, with services from Cisco and Skype already ubiquitous in workplaces and homes. However, its videoconferencing infrastructure was simpler to use, faster and more flexible than any previous solution, and it swiftly took the world by storm.
Its success bred competition, however, and companies such as Microsoft and Google, along with numerous smaller communications firms, have begun making inroads on Zoom's formerly commanding lead. Additionally, as workplaces are mostly adopting a hybrid or flexible working strategy, some of its importance as a workplace tool is wearing off and it is recording a gradual decline in daily usage rates.
To counter these trends, Zoom is expanding its business offerings through product development and strategic acquisitions. Alongside many other large tech companies, it has battled through a difficult economic situation, but it nonetheless remains a profitable company and household name. Plus, its track record of innovation means it is still very much one to watch in the communications space.
