Our take

Powering triple-A game titles and the audio of contemporary visual media, Krotos Audio builds sound software for global sound designers across video games, film and TV. With titles such as Stranger Things, Star Trek and Game of Thrones utilising its products, the Edinburgh-based studio produces sound plugins, bundle packs and FX solutions.

Spanning such a breadth of sound design products, it's impressive that Krotos is such a small team, one that started life as a spin-out of Edinburgh University. The company has enjoyed modest grants and seed funding rounds to fuel its growth and is outpacing its size with a large and loyal customer base. Dehumanizer 2 is its flagship product, a modular, node-based software for vocal sound design that is used to create monsters, robots and subtle voice modulation.

It launched a free version of its Krotos Studio suite in 2022, which no doubt helped it grow global interest in its powerful products. Moving forward, Krotos is focused on expanding its team to meet the rising demand for its software.
