Ethics Research Scientist, Google DeepMind

• The position will require an interdisciplinary approach to research and a willingness to collaborate widely with projects across the whole of DeepMind
• You will need experience in a technical research area such as computational social science or Machine Learning as well as expertise in natural language processing, or a related field
• You will also need to have familiarity with science and technology studies, political science, economics, or sociology
• PhD in a quantitative social science field (political science, economics, sociology), applied statistics, or equivalent practical experience
• Experience in an academic institution, a public-interest research institute, think tank, or equivalent industry role
• Experience in machine learning, statistical analysis
• Experience in natural language processing or another technical language-related field
• Experience in Machine Learning Fairness and Governance and accountability
• Ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and work across multiple science and technology areas
• Ability to exercise accurate judgement in a constantly evolving environment
• Excellent analytical and organisational skills
• Excellent communicator, in person and in writing

• Research Scientists on the Ethics Research Team at DeepMind lead our efforts in developing novel analytical and socio-technical tools that advance our understanding of emerging ethical questions surrounding AI and its potential consequences
• This team also plays a meaningful role in promoting ethical best practice within DeepMind, by supporting training and review processes
• As an Ethics Research Scientist at DeepMind you’ll collaborate with our research teams to advance the thoughtful and ethical development of AI:
• Conduct groundbreaking, peer-reviewed research on the ethics and/or societal impact of AI systems
• Develop ethically-aligned and socially responsible research, projects, experiments, and designs, in collaboration with other researchers at DeepMind
• Design, build and run large-scale improvements to processes and/or systems by making recommendations, troubleshooting potential social issues
• Communicate complex social and ethical topics and nuanced insights to diverse audiences
• Contribute to the development and advancement of Machine Learning Fairness and AI ethics by preparing briefings and attending panel discussions and conferences
