Role
Who you are
- You have a background or experience in a scientific subject, such as a degree or equivalent working in a related field
- You'll have experience developing Python applications in a production environment
- You’ll have experience building and maintaining continuous integration/deployment pipelines (CI/CD)
- You’ll have some experience building UIs using React, TypeScript/JavaScript
- You are confident with handling and analysing data
- You are comfortable working autonomously and managing your own workload but also able to work collaboratively as part of a team
- You’ll strong mentorship skills and experience mentoring other engineers
- You'll be excited to learn about molecular biology, protein engineering and automation in order to be more effective in your job
What the job involves
- As a Senior Software Engineer at LabGenius, you will collaborate with our talented team of scientists, data scientists and software engineers to deliver our ambitious internal and partnered drug discovery programmes, helping us build a future where AI rapidly engineers novel, life-enhancing biotherapeutics
- You will do this by building tools and services which automate experiments and process scientific data at scale
- Work with our Data Scientists to productionise our machine learning drug discovery platform
- Lead the design and build of software solutions to help our wet lab scientists generate high quality results
- Configure, maintain and build integrations for our lab information management systems (Benchling)
- Work closely with lab and data scientists to understand their problems and offer solutions
- Use Google Cloud Platform to deploy, manage and secure applications and data
- Work to maintain and improve the quality of our software, exemplifying best practices for testing, code review, security, documentation, and architecture

LabGenius's protein engineering platform integrates several technologies from the fields of machine learning, synthetic biology, and robotics. It uses computational methods to explore protein fitness landscapes and improve multiple drug properties simultaneously.
The discovery of protein therapeutics has historically been highly artisanal, relying heavily on humans for both experimental design and execution. This dependence is limiting because, as a species, we’re cognitively incapable of fully grasping the complexity of biological systems. LabGenius is pushing the boundaries of protein engineering through the development of EVA - a smart robotic platform capable of designing, conducting and critically, learning from its own experiments. The learning aspect means that EVA gets continuously smarter as it unpicks the genetic design rules that underpin life.
LabGenius is deploying EVA to develop novel antibody fragments in therapeutic areas, including solid tumours, where there's a distinct advantage over traditional antibody formats. EVA engineers high-value protein drug properties that currently remain a challenge, such as efficacy, potency, selectivity, and manufacturability.
The team at LabGenius are excited by this rapid experimentation and are looking at how the same principles can be applied more widely to find treatments for human diseases.
