Role
Who you are
- As Software Engineer, you already understand the full life cycle of web development and see opportunities in front of you. You're curious, solution-oriented and have a strong customer focus
- Our stack is mainly focused around Ruby, however, if you’re passionate about learning new things then prior experience with Ruby is not essential. Next to this:
- At least, 4+ years of experience with customer-facing products in related industries, e.g. e-commerce, fintechs, SaaS
- At least 4+ years with software development, in specific OOP (object-oriented programming)
- Experience designing, implementing, and deploying backend services, with a focus on high availability, low latency, and consistency
- Good understanding of APIs design
- Familiarity with SQL and relational databases
- Excellent communication in English
- Comfortable raising concerns, sharing new ideas, documenting, and finding opportunities for solution alternatives
- You strive to be a great team player and don’t shy away from new challenges
- You are someone who takes initiative and is ready to jump in and help if needed
- You possess a "growth mindset" in which you take the initiative to further your personal skill set as a software developer, whether by learning new skills and/or technologies or by seeking new opportunities
What the job involves
- On our path to becoming the most visited online curated marketplace for special objects, our Engineering team is on a mission to deliver the best experience across our platforms by building best-in-class products for search & discovery, bidding, curation, logistics, payments, and support
- We're a scale-up with customer-facing challenges dealing with high-scale (75k auctions per week) and high traffic (more than 10 million visitors per month)
- As a Software Engineer, you’ll support one of our 3 verticals - Demand, Supply, or Fulfilment - improving and delivering product innovations for our platform
- Working in small, fully autonomous, and highly collaborative Agile teams, you will build scalable, maintainable, and resilient microservices and features
- Build: Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve. You’ll be part of a team that is end-to-end responsible for their own microservices
- Collaborate: Work closely with product designers, product owners, front, back, and mobile engineers to share new ideas and make our processes even more efficient
- Growth: Support our great engineering culture, by documenting and advocating for best development practices - constantly improving the quality of our products by fixing bugs and refactoring the code base where necessary
- Learn: Boost your career by testing new technologies and participating in our Technical Week, a week dedicated to promoting creativity (after 2 product sprints), innovation, and knowledge sharing across domains

Our take
In the past, it was only possible to purchase special items such as rare coins, antiques, and vintage cars at auctions held at physical locations. These days, many people prefer online auctions, but whilst they provide a wider range of objects for sale, this comes at the cost of proper pricing and quality control. Catawiki provides an expert-regulated online auctioning marketplace where users can browse and bid for special objects easily via the web or mobile app.
The objects listed on Catawiki are curated, valued, and verified by in-house experts, with over 65,000 objects passing through the marketplace every week. In this approach, the company has combined the community knowledge found at traditional auctions with the benefits of digital auctioning platforms, occupying a space that has long remained empty, and avoiding competition from bidding marketplace giants such as eBay.
Catawiki has received good funding in the past, which contributed to it becoming the success it is today. A recent venture has seen the company expand to serve artisanal artists with its handmade products auction series.
