Role
Who you are
- You have 5+ years of experience as a fullstack software engineer
- You have experience with React/TS, Python or other modern programming languages
- You are comfortable switching between different technical stacks and learning new ones
- You enjoy collaborating with product, design and other stakeholders. We don’t operate in silos, and you’ll be working closely with other teams and cross-functional peers. You should be able to express opinions and stay aligned
- You take a holistic approach to problem solving. You believe in solving a problem from first principles rather than simply shipping a solution. You learn from your mistakes and work through obstacles with the rest of the team
- You have experience leading projects, gathering requirements, supporting partners and mentoring others. You believe in ‘lead by example’ with regards to ownership, autonomy, quality and impact, and no problem is “not my problem”
- You have a track-record of shipping incremental + delightful features that improve the overall experience
- You are a Discord user and want to make the product better!

What the job involves
- Game Records are the core of our gaming conversation. It is the fuel that drives the most popular gaming features on Discord, and allows us to unlock new experiences for users and opportunities for game developers
- The Game Records team is directly responsible for “source of truth” systems that drive detection and safeguard metadata for hundreds of thousands of games. This puts our team in a position to consult and participate in some of the biggest features, partnerships and game-related launches at Discord.
- Engage with developers, game studios and other partners to find opportunities and address challenges towards providing a more rich experience for players while gaming and engaging with online communities
- Partner with other internal teams to design, build, and maintain features that help users connect and make friends through gaming on our platform, across desktop and mobile
- Expand and safeguard our growing collection of games and game-related metadata, that helps drive nearly every gaming-related feature on our platform
- Partner with our Content, Marketing and ML teams to improve ranking and discovery systems, enabling users to find meaningful connections and relevant content
- Collaborate with Engineers, Designers, Product Owners, and Data Scientists to build engaging, fun, and trusted experiences, while experimenting and iterating on ideas that enhance user interactions

Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 90M daily active users in 19M communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and X, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord's remarkable growth, however, isn't without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed rivals such as Meta and ongoing scrutiny over moderation and user safety. Despite this, Discord has continued to strengthen its platform through investments in privacy and accessibility, including the rollout of end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls for all users and the launch of a native Windows on ARM app to improve performance on next-generation devices. Alongside acquisitions such as Sentropy and Gas, these developments show just how hard Discord is pushing beyond its gaming roots.
