Role
Who you are
- 3+ years backend development experience (.NET and Node.js)
- Strong experience with RESTful APIs, service architectures, and event-driven systems
- Proven experience integrating AI/LLM service APIs and prompt engineering
- Experience with Cloud providers, Azure or AWS
- Strong understanding of distributed systems
- Experience with rate limiting, retry strategies, and third-party service dependencies
- Experience with working with Unity game teams is a plus
- Excellent problem-solving, system design, and communication skills
- Ability to evaluate and integrate emerging AI tools and services
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and collaborative skills
- Strong communication abilities. Be able to communicate complex concepts to non-technical audiences
- Be able to self-learn and coach team members
What the job involves
- As an Backend Engineer at Labster, you will be instrumental in building robust backend services that leverage AI capabilities (particularly LLM APIs) to enhance personalized adaptive tutoring in immersive learning experiences
- You'll play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and scaling services that integrate with AI providers and automation tools to deliver educational content effectively, contributing significantly to Labster's mission to empower 100 million students globally with personal AI tutors that dramatically advance equal access to high-quality science and healthcare education
- Stay Abreast of Generative AI Developments: Keep up with emerging AI and NLP technologies to improve learning experiences
- Build AI-Powered Backend Services: Design scalable backends integrating LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini etc.) to power adaptive learning
- Service Architecture & Development: Manage the full backend lifecycle—API design, architecture, deployment, monitoring, and optimization for external AI service dependencies
- AI Service Integration: Connect and optimize multiple AI services with rate limiting, caching, and cost-efficient abstractions
- Collaborate with Educational Experts & Developers: Translate educational needs into robust backend solutions
- Develop and Document APIs: Build and maintain well-documented APIs for internal and external developer use
- Collaborate with the Data Team: Work with Data Engineers and Analysts to align backend systems with analytics and internal tools
- Data-Driven Product Improvements: Use educational and performance data to inform and enhance product features
Our take
Accessing laboratories and professional workspaces is essential for practical experience in areas such as science and nursing, but this is generally only possible at universities. This is due to a lack of funding and necessity for such equipment in schools and colleges, yet the practical nature of laboratories shows potential to help illustrate abstract scientific concepts to young students.
Labster develops virtual laboratories that allow students to conduct experiments and visualise abstract scientific concepts through digital equipment, providing a practical experience in order to improve their learning experience. The virtual environments are aligned with STEM curriculums, paid for by educational institutes, and can be accessed through any computer without requiring additional software.
Virtual reality shows great potential for providing virtual working environments for a range of educational applications, but these usually require expensive VR setups such as headsets, high-spec computers, and controllers. Labster on the other hand has taken a bare-bones approach by providing its environments within a web browser, helping to provide an augmented learning experience to all students equally.
