Who you are
- Experience working with Python & Serverless
- Strong fundamental programming skills (data structures, algorithms)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken
- An interest (or experience) in any of Functional Programming, Distributed Systems or Event-Driven Architectures (using Apache Kafka)
- Knowledge of decision engines wanted but not essential

What the job involves
- We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Accounts & Card team
- Our Credit Risk Platform team, part of the Core Services department, is a collaborative group of problem-solvers dedicated to building and refining the technology that delivers near-instant decisions to our customers
- As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll play a key role in evolving our bespoke decision engine, which is central to our application process
- You’ll work closely with talented colleagues to understand and enhance our credit strategy implementation and the software systems that support it
- This is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact while growing your expertise in an environment that values innovation, teamwork, and shared success
- You love to build new things but also don’t shy away from digging into a legacy codebase. You love to work in a complex problem domain that is implemented with simple software systems
- You have an interest or experience in Functional Programming, microservices and/or event-driven architecture
- You are a collaborator - you encourage pairing and believe that working together is smarter than working in a silo
- You are a teacher - generous with your time and expertise to teach stakeholders and our fellow engineers how to answer their own questions
- Proactively problem solving, identifying and confidently mitigating any risks, issues or control weaknesses that arise in your day-to-day
Our take
Funding Circle launched in 2010 and it was the perfect time in the market. After the financial crisis in 2008, financial institutions were hesitant to lend money. Loans to SMEs were at record lows.
This meant that Funding Circle's innovative platform - connecting investors and businesses directly - had immediate product-market fit and growth. Funding Circle remains incredibly focused on small businesses, and this set it apart from other lending platforms. The business has since expanded to the USA.
The company completed its IPO in September 2018 in a challenging economic environment in Europe and the USA. In 2020, however, trading in the group’s core UK market was helped by its participation in the government’s Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme – the company says it has been responsible for a quarter of CBILS loans by volume since it was accredited to join the scheme in April 2020. Funding Circle continues to be a leading SME financing platform, exemplified by its partnership with Bayview Asset Management, with whom it has surpassed £1 billion in funding for its Term Lending product.
