Who you are
- Lead-level experience either; In-house at a fast-paced, high-growth tech company, and/or, Studio experience from renowned agencies such as Collins, Uncommon, JKR, Pentagram (or hands-on experience at small, high-impact studios)
- Demonstrate a strong portfolio of end-to-end digital work spanning concept, UX, UI, visual design, and interaction
- Proven track record of building and maintaining trend-leading brands
- A growth mindset with a curiosity to learn, iterate, and improve continuously
- Comfort with ambiguity and a DIY, roll-up-your-sleeves culture, while maintaining high design standards
- User-obsessed approach, ensuring design decisions are informed by audience needs
- Ability to lead by example, elevating the design output of the entire team
- Fluent in the language of product design, bridging brand and product experiences seamlessly
- This is a role for someone comfortable with ambiguity, high ownership, and helping build structure as the team continues to grow
What the job involves
- We’re seeking a Lead Brand Designer to elevate our brand with a focus on Web & Digital touchpoints
- ✨ In this role, you’ll be responsible for refining and expanding our brand guidelines while ensuring their seamless implementation across 360° web & digital experiences. You have a deep understanding of design systems and cohesive branding, but what sets you apart is your passion for creative storytelling - we want a craftsperson obsessed with the “Why?” ✨
- Collaboration is at the heart of this role as you will work closely with the Head of Design and other creative partners, contributing your expertise, and helping shape a brand that resonates consistently and meaningfully
- Lead the concept, design, and evolution of Cleo’s website and broader digital brand experiences
- Translate campaigns, product stories, and brand narratives into cohesive experiences across pages, platforms, and devices
- Establish and evolve scalable digital systems, including responsive frameworks, modular components, templates, and interaction patterns
- Lead work alongside the Head of Design, from early concept and wireframing through high-fidelity design, prototyping, build review, and launch
- Partner closely with developers, product designers, copywriters, and marketing stakeholders to balance brand, user, business, and technical requirements
- Help guide cross-functional teams through design sprints, critiques, rapid prototyping, and decision-making tailored to the constraints and opportunities of the web
- Operate independently across priorities, meetings, timelines, and delivery while remaining open to feedback and creative direction
- Mentor designers and raise the standard of digital craft across the wider team

Cleo was one of the first companies to make great use of chatbots that sit within Facebook's messenger app. This chatbot-first approach and Gen Z user base have given it strong virality. It now has millions of registered users, 99% of which are based in the US, leading to a decision to take a year break from the UK market to focus on its US Gen Z customers. And after a successful year in the US its now eyeing up a return to the UK.
Its Series C funding will help the company to double down in the US, where it will make a significant increase in employee headcount, and enable Cleo to maintain and expand its service during an economic downturn.
Financial advice delivered via bots is a crowded space, so Cleo benefits from having a strong brand presence. It has gone for very bold, fun, Gen Z-focused messaging which helps it to stand out from competitors such as Emma, Plum, and Chip.
