Role
Who you are
- Extensive experience in program management, including hands on experience with Privacy and/or Compliance more generally
- Subject matter expertise in privacy laws and regulatory frameworks (in particular with GDPR, UK GDPR); Depop operates globally and a foundational understanding of other international privacy laws is a plus
- Ability to translate privacy compliance obligations to a marketplace business model
- Experience designing, implementing, and operationalizing privacy compliance programs
- Success in expanding operational efficiency and effectiveness through process improvements, technology deployment and other mechanisms
- The ability to easily adapt to new situations and systems
- Strong comfort level with technology
- Sound judgment, logical critical thinking skills, and the ability to operate confidently in ambiguous and unfamiliar situations
- Passion for developing others and bringing out the best in your team
- Thoughtful, collaborative leadership skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience handling sensitive topics with discretion and composure
- Certified privacy qualifications is a strong plus (e.g. CIPP/M)
What the job involves
- We are looking for an experienced Privacy Program Manager to manage Depop’s Privacy Program
- In this role you will gain a comprehensive understanding of Depop’s strategic objectives while partnering with other key stakeholders to help operationalize and mature Depop’s Privacy Program and provide strategic support to Depop’s business
- This role will be supported by Etsy’s enterprise Privacy Team and Depop’s Legal team
- This role will provide strategic direction to a growing e-commerce marketplace in a complex commercial and regulatory terrain
- Responsible for day to day operations of the privacy program of Depop, including adjacent areas of data governance, working collaboratively with cross-functional stakeholders to continuously improve the operations of Depop’s privacy program
- Lead efforts to identify and manage intricate dependencies, mitigate risks and issues, and build clear lines of communication across teams working on Privacy-related work for Depop in collaboration with the enterprise privacy team at Etsy, Depop’s parent company
- Work with Etsy’s privacy team to deploy and right size, enterprise policies, guidance, and standards for use at Depop; Work with cross-functional stakeholders to continuously improve the operations of Depop’s privacy program
- Support activities related to internal and external oversight of Depop’s privacy program (e.g. monitoring, testing) and collaborate closely with our Legal and Compliance teams to mature program areas
- Own and manage the relationship with Depop’s external Data Protection Officer (“DPO”), coordinating internally as needed as it relates to responding to regulatory complaints from consumers, impact assessments and other responsibilities under the purview of the DPO
- Work closely with Depop’s customer support and legal team as needed to refine workflows related to consumer privacy complaints and user rights related requests (e.g. right to be forgotten (deletion); access rights)
- Successfully lead and collaborate with engineering, product, legal, compliance, external representatives, and/or other partners to deliver on key Privacy and adjacent projects (data governance) and elements of our privacy program
- Triage business requests from product, marketing and other stakeholders that drive business strategy and coordinate with relevant subject matter experts (security, legal, and external DPO) to provide consolidated and actionable advice and recommendations
- Coordinate with the security and legal teams to triage and manage cyber security incidents
- Provide general support to the Depop legal team on other projects as assigned
- Develop and maintain necessary policies, record keeping framework, and procedures for privacy governance
- Help identify, source, implement tools to support our privacy program
- Educate and train individuals across the company on policies and processes
- Own and maintain Depop’s suite of privacy-related statutory record keeping obligations (data inventory, impact assessments, consumer notices and consent tracking)
- Triage and coordinate privacy reviews, including data protection impact assessments (DIPA), transfer impact assessment (TIAs), vendor security processes, coordinating between legal, security and other internal stakeholders
- Own the privacy training program across Depop and work with Etsy Compliance to deploy other compliance related trainings across the business
- Constantly learn and stay up to date on the fast moving changes in worldwide privacy law and policy, and educate teams by creating and delivering privacy training in collaboration with Etsy’s privacy team and Depop’s legal team
- Help instill privacy by design at all levels of the company, through education, internal guidance, materials, and maintaining internal privacy-related policies
- Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require. You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, including providing general support to the Depop Legal team, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time

The re-sale market across everyday clothing, collectables and luxury is growing. One driving force of this is that people care more about sustainability and are therefore buying second-hand goods. This has resulted in a fast growing market with plenty of opportunity.
The experience on Depop is what you'd expect from platforms such as Instagram. The focus on social, creators and influencers has created a very high level of engagement.
Depop was quick to realise the value in power users and has focused efforts there (where people are generating up to $100,000 in annual income for themselves by selling items). The popularity of social platforms making individuals into entrepreneurs will likely attract interest from Instagram and Pinterest. This may pose a challenge for Depop as these competitors will be in a strong position to leverage their networks.
The company has been acquired by Etsy and is now focusing on strategic partnerships in several industries to keep market share flowing in.
