Who you are
- Passionate about building a product with a positive impact on the world
- 7+ years experience of professional software development experience
- Significant professional experience with modern Typescript, Node JS, and AWS
- Demonstrated experience designing & building high-availability HTTP APIs, high throughput backend services, including knowledge of CDNs, authentication & authorization protocols,
- Willing to learn new tools, languages, and patterns as needed to build a great product
- A strong communicator who enjoys collaborating with other engineers, designers, PMs, and scientists
- A considerate technical leader who will mentor junior engineers through design sessions, code reviews, and team meetings
- Excited to be be a part of a small but growing startup team
What the job involves
- You will be a key contributor to front-end and back-end engineering on cloud software systems on our “Fleet” team, which is a highly cross-functional team that designs our sensing systems and the cloud applications that connect them
- You’ll work alongside other software engineers and collaborate directly with hardware and firmware engineers to build features in applications (eg demo.sofarocean.com) and APIs (eg docs.sofarocean.com) that interact with our hardware products: Spotter, Smart Mooring, next generation platforms and Sofar’s new open hardware connectivity stack - Bristlemouth https://www.bristlemouth.org
- Our tech stack includes React on the frontend with backend APIs written using Node.js, Typescript, Express, Postgres, and Nest.js, along with some data processing services written in Python
- You will own features across the stack and should be comfortable architecting solutions from data storage layer to UIs
Our take
Drastically changing weather and climate is one of the foremost issues of our time. And as we work to limit the impact of the climate crisis, we need trustworthy banks of data on how these changes have manifested, and what trajectory our world is on. This is where Solar Ocean comes in, with its global network of ocean-monitoring buoys.
It is the largest network of its kind, with thousands of solar-powered ‘spotters’ across the world’s oceans delivering over 200,000 updates every day. Its product is used primarily by climate scientists, but also has important applications in shipping, weather forecasting and maritime research as well.
Sofar is the largest network of its kind, and even though its spotters aren’t as sophisticated as similar government-funded ones, the sheer scale of its data collection makes its forecasts far more accurate. The funding it has raised is supporting the further extension of its network and development of its data services.
