Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams
- 10+ years of experience in delivery multi-tier, highly scalable, distributed software systems with strong architectural design skills
- Demonstrated experience with embedded cross-platform Linux based product builds
- Demonstrated experience leading build system modernization (re-architecture) efforts
- 7+ years of experience organizing and refactoring complex C/C++ and Python projects with multiple embedded toolchains
- Demonstrated ability to be proactive, self-driven, and make practical trade-offs based on business needs, entrepreneurial spirit
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Familiarity with tools like OE, Bazel, BitBake, CMake, Buildroot, Make is a great plus
- Experience with Gitlab or Teamcity, and modern CI/CD methodologies
- BS or MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
What the job involves
- In this role you will lead a growing team of software engineers focused on Build and Release System powering embedded development at Roku
- This team is part of the Advanced Development organization at Roku. It is a hands-on technical management role, you will drive architecture discussions, take ownership and responsibility over new projects, deliver high quality software at a reasonable timeline
- Provide an inclusive environment, closely collaborating with engineering stakeholders across the company
- Lead team of experienced software engineers through the evolution of developer systems, including the RokuOS build system
- Lead the team responsible for official releases of Roku firmware
- Design, develop and deploy scalable development systems through the time of exponential growth of platforms and clients the team supports
- Hands-on technical management role - drive architecture discussions, take ownership and responsibility over new projects, deliver high quality software with tight timelines
- Partner with engineers and engineering leaders across the organization, to capture the requirements of the growing architecture
- Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, and drive self-service culture

According to Nielsen data, the average streamer spends over seven minutes searching for something to watch. Streaming services use customers' viewing history to make suggestions, but these are limited to programs licensed for that particular service.
Roku provides an integrated streaming service that offers TV channels, movies and third-party streaming services, resulting in an all-in-one streaming platform. The service can be accessed through a variety of customized subscription packages and fees.
Roku stands out in the streaming industry by bringing many competitors together in one package. The startup provides further innovative services such as a weekly TV series named 'Roku Recommends' which uses first-party data to recommend essential viewing to users. Alongside funding filmmakers through its "Change Makers Program", Roku also acquired its own original library of shows through its acquisition of now-defunct Quibi's library in 2021. After successful collaborations with TCL and Hisense, the first in-house "Roku Television" was released in 2023, further exemplifying the streaming company's wider ambitions in the media sector.
