Who you are
- Bachelor’s degree
- 4-8+ years of experience as a paralegal, preferably with experience in tax or financial concepts
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities
- Familiarity with tax audits and litigation a plus
- Knowledge of corporate regulatory compliance a plus
What the job involves
- The Tax Controversy team is responsible for developing and implementing Airbnb’s global audit strategy and, including determining a vision for global tax disputes and coordinating and leading responses with tax authorities worldwide.
- The tax controversy team collaborates across all areas of the tax group, legal, and policy in responding to audit and tax litigation issues involving Airbnb’s direct and indirect taxes worldwide.
- This role allows a candidate to be immersed in a variety of tax issues and high profile tax disputes, and will work with the Director of Tax Controversy, outside advisors, and across departments at Airbnb to respond to global tax authorities and support the company’s return positions
- You will be responsible for helping the Tax Controversy team deliver superior tax audit and litigation results.
- We’re looking for a Paralegal to join our team and support our growing business by providing legal expertise and operational efficiency in Tax Controversy and across the Tax team
- Provide substantive support for tax disputes in audits, administrative forums, and tax litigation
- Work with members of the Tax team and the business to respond to discovery by coordinating written responses and document collection
- Manage day-to-day calendaring of audits and tax litigation deadlines
- Implement and maintain systems for organizing tax controversy productions
- Maintain and update databases of key documents for the Tax team
- Update tax controversy trackers and resource materials
- Implement and refine internal processes across the Tax team for executing agreements, maintaining records, and coordinating with stakeholders
- Coordinate with Airbnb business and legal stakeholders to ensure compliance and processes are in place
Our take
When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.
Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.
Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
