Role
Who you are

- Care about the “why” behind the code, keeping the end user and business impact in mind
- Have owned services in production and managed their full lifecycle, from cross-service debugging to monitoring
- Be comfortable participating in an on-call rotation
- Treat testing as a core part of development; be comfortable writing unit and end-to-end tests and owning the quality of what you ship
- Have hands-on experience with event-driven systems such as Kafka and with PostgreSQL
- Have experience designing REST and/or GraphQL APIs and integrating third-party APIs
- Be comfortable with AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes, and able to work with Terraform

- Bonus points: Fintech, payments, lending, fraud or credit-risk experience; rule engines or ML in production; LLM tooling; Rust, Rails or Vue; German
What the job involves
- Risk Engineering builds the systems that decide which subscription orders Grover approves, declines, reviews or verifies, in real time, across four markets and for both consumers and businesses
- As a Senior Software Engineer, you report to the Engineering Manager, Risk Engineering, and join a small, senior team that owns its services end to end
- You work closely with risk analysts, data scientists, and product to grow approval rate while keeping fraud and defaults in check
- Our risk decisioning platform: the rule engine, experiments and decision APIs (FastAPI, GraphQL federation) that every Grover order passes through
- New risk products, starting with dynamic pricing and counter offers, from design to production
- Integrations with credit bureaus and identity, fraud and AML providers, built to stay reliable when vendors are not
- Event-driven flows on Kafka for decisions, manual review, ID verification and bank-account checks, correct under retries, duplicates and race conditions
- Tools for our risk analysts: the manual review experience and our LLM-powered risk assistant on AWS Bedrock
- Reliability and observability of your services: Datadog monitors, on-call, runbooks and removing legacy dependencies
- The Grover Way - How We Drive Success:
- Own It: We take ownership seriously and define what success looks like. We drive shared ownership and don't wait - we drive. We keep one another accountable and take responsibility when issues arise
- Challenge, Decide, and Commit: We engage in proactive support, active listening, and healthy conflict to reach the best outcomes. We value diverse perspectives and, once a decision is made, we commit to it fully
- Empower and Grow: We enable, trust, and coach one another toward high performance, always thinking and acting like owners. We seek growth, apply feedback, and support the development of our peers
- Respect, Transparency, and Clarity: We strive for clear, respectful, and open communication with no surprises. We simplify complex information so everyone knows the "what, why, and how"
Our take
Purchasing tech items like mobile phones and laptops can be cost-heavy and are not always affordable. People often have to plan around such purchases; the costs are unavoidable as they represent essential investments. Furthermore, the life cycle of products usually begins and ends with one user, which is not always optimised for sustainability.
Grover tackles these existing issues by offering a subscription service to tech products where customers can rent products on a rolling monthly basis. Through its flexible approach, the company aims to reach a wide target audience by increasing access to tech products as well as maximising the value of these items by reducing waste and increasing their circulation.
Originally founded in Berlin, Grover has expanded its services to America, helping it achieve a 354% Year On Year growth. In 2022, the company opened a Miami headquarters, expanded its US team, and achieved 5.9 million visitors to its website. All of this combined signals the company's ripeness for expansion, whilst an impressive $50 million VC investment awarded in 2024 will accelerate a sustainable trajectory of growth.
