Role
Who you are
- We are looking for an experienced Product Manager with a strong background in payments to join our team and build platforms, money products, and financial infrastructure that make payments secure, compliant and easy to use for buyers and sellers
- You have deep domain knowledge of the payments stack and are passionate about creating intuitive and efficient payment solutions
- We are looking for someone who has a strong bias towards action, is excited to work in a domain specific problem space, and wants to build 0 → 1 solutions and systems from scratch
- We’ve found that low ego, a growth mindset, and leaning into action and high impact goes a long way here
- As our Payments Product Manager, you should have 7+ years of Product Management experience, plus:
- Experience working in the payments or fintech domain, especially in an ecommerce marketplace
- Strong understanding of payment products, gateways, processing, and compliance standards
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous environments, identify trade-offs, and make decisions with limited information in high-pressure situations
- Proven ability to develop sound research methodologies and collect, synthesize, analyze, and interpret data
- Experienced in design, and hypothesis driven product development
- Deep empathy for users and a passion for delivering outstanding user experiences
What the job involves
- You will be responsible for all areas of the payments experience and treasury, from ideation to launch, and will work closely with cross-functional teams across the company to deliver exceptional payment experiences for our users
- Take responsibility for leading the company’s payments strategy
- Design and lead the product roadmap and strategy for these areas, balancing short and long-term goals
- Engage regularly as a trusted advisor with leadership to understand their strategies, pain points, and priorities to inform product strategy, while providing transparency into roadmaps and managing expectations
- Roll up your sleeves to define product requirements & work with engineering, design and broader team to bring our roadmap to market at lightning speed
- Do whatever it takes to ensure the cross functional teams in finance, ops, tax are operating effectively, unblock them and make sure they can move at a rapid pace
- Analyze competitors and industry trends to advance our payments products and drive innovation
- Ensure all payment solutions comply with relevant regulations and security standards
Our take
The collectible toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectible toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars, and has also expanded to sports cards.
The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.
The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
