Who you are

At least 2 years of experience in end-to-end product design
Portfolio demonstrating previous experience across research, design and delivery of digital products & services
Show strong product thinking and proactive ownership, comfortable solving complex climate challenges in ambiguous situations
Worked with design systems and contributed to building them out
Desire to dive deep into the world of (sustainable) food systems
Fluent in English (German is a nice to have)
Based in Berlin or willing to relocate

What the job involves

Shape and mature Root's product suite, taking ownership of solutions that range from farmer-facing tools across European markets to enterprise platforms serving Europe's largest food industry players
Over the next 12 months you can expect:
At Root, product designers are generalists: We want you to own the process from user research to prototypes using Figma & AI tools, all the way to working with engineers to make it a reality
Help shape the design function at Root: we have ambitious goals; as an early design hire, you will be a key part of it
Create experiences for farmers spanning 10+ countries (and counting) and enterprise teams at Europe's largest food companies
What the role can evolve into:
Own the end-to-end design for a number Root products in the works
Manage the expansion of Root’s product to other verticals/geographies, skill up into helping drive our product strategy, and service design offerings - we support you on your self-determined growth trajectory

Our take

Food chains are responsible for anywhere between 20% and 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and it’s something businesses can’t sweep under the rug any longer. Tightening regulations require that businesses disclose their climate performance, and stakeholders and customers are paying close attention. Bad climate practices are increasingly bad for business, and Root Global is looking to help companies keep their performance up.

The Root software platform is designed to help food and beverage companies shoot for a zero-carbon future, by offering what Root hopes will become an industry-wide carbon operating system. Essentially, a database providing full life-cycle carbon emission data so businesses can make climate practise decisions based on accurate, comprehensive data - instead of the current system of upstream and downstream estimates.

This could prove a highly valuable proposition. Increasingly large numbers of companies are setting science-based climate targets, but research suggests the majority of these are distant, imprecise, or lack actionable road maps to get there. So, solid carbon accounting software is in urgent demand, and if Root, off the back of its 2024 seed funding, can build out the client base necessary for industry-wide coverage, it stands to make a substantial impact.
