Who you are

A proven track record of strong technical mentorship
Experience building large scale, high throughput distributed systems and scaling web services, particularly those using and analyzing large amounts of data
High level of fluency with and experience using technologies and frameworks like (but not limited to) some of our most-used languages - Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, Java/JEE, Node.js, Javascript, React or React Native - or deep experience with any relevant transferrable technologies
A passion for efficiency and collaboration, with a history of establishing great relationships with UX and Product Management teams across time zones
A commitment and drive for quality, technical excellence and results

What the job involves

As a Senior Technical Leader, you'll help drive the product vision to its implementation. You and the team will design and build technically innovative solutions that empower all teams at Shopify to build amazing new features into Shopify’s Checkout
Merchants that depend on Shopify for a highly scalable, performant, and reliable platform benefit directly from the work you do. You will maintain a high bar for quality and lead and mentor other engineers. And of course, you'll be hands-on in the code and contribute technically
Learn and grow constantly to feed your passion for self-improvement and make those around you better
Design and build highly available, resilient and scalable platform primitives & APIs
Work through problems with your team, roll up your sleeves, form an opinion and advocate for engineering-specific roadmap items
Collaborate with other Shopify leaders, executives and external partners to provide the best commerce experience for our merchants

Our take

Prior to Shopify, eCommerce solutions for online businesses were a pretty ramshackle affair, either picked from a poor selection of expensive off-the-shelf products or developed in-house. Shopify was born from its founder's frustration in setting up a store to sell snowboards online. Since then it has grown into the world's biggest eCommerce platform, with over 1 million active merchants using the platform to sell almost anything imaginable over the internet.

Today Shopify has a commanding lead among eCommerce platforms, though it may be threatened by the rapid growth of its rival WooCommerce, which is popular in online stores built using WordPress. However Shopify has made moves to stay ahead of the competition, developing new products such as Shopify Collabs which makes it easier for influencers to collaborate with brands, and offering financing services to eligible merchants to support their business growth.

Shopify has enjoyed strong growth in the years since its IPO, achieving more than 26% revenue growth compared to 2022 in 2023 alone, driven by the continuing shift to online shopping and the improved capabilities of the platform. It will be looking to build on this growth by continuing to develop its range of products and making further strategic acquisitions to support its platform.
