Who you are
- 2–4 years of post-qualification legal experience in German insurance law
- Solid understanding of German regulatory frameworks and administrative processes
- Experience with GDPR and ideally with labor law
- Comfortable working in a tech environment and exploring AI-powered legal solutions
- Native in German and fluent in English
- Hands-on, proactive, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
What the job involves
- We are looking for a high-performing, pragmatic and tech-savvy Legal Counsel to join our growing legal team. The position will be based in Berlin and report directly to our Head of Legal. You will be responsible for handling day-to-day legal work related to insurance operations in Germany, particularly supporting our Claims and Customer Service teams
- This role will also act as the main liaison for legal compliance in Germany, playing a key part in reducing external legal costs, mitigating regulatory risks, and enabling sustainable growth. You will collaborate closely with the Country Manager Germany and internal teams across the company. Occasional travel to Sweden is expected
- We operate with a hybrid work model, where employees are generally expected to be in the office three days per week. However, the Legal team is expected to be present four days per week, ideally aligning with the working hours of the Customer Success and Claims team to support collaboration and responsiveness
- Provide legal support to the Claims and Customer Success teams for Germany
- Handle regulatory and insurance-related legal matters, including communication with authorities such as BaFin
- Ensure GDPR compliance and respond to data protection inquiries in accordance with German and EU laws
- Support the Country Manager and Head of Legal on matters related to German law
- Assist the Head of Legal in labor law matters
- Help the company adopt legal technology and AI tools to streamline legal work and compliance processes
Our take
Lassie is aiming to disrupt the pet insurance space with its preventative, mobile app-based insurance for dogs and cats. The idea is to make insurance easier for pet owners, collecting all their policy information in one accessible place, as well as supplying information for them to help their pets lead healthier lives.
Developed in close collaboration with veterinarians and animal care experts, the app gives users access to courses and tips tailored to the breed of their animal, including information on any conditions and diseases that are more prevalent in that breed. The insurance policies are provided by Dina Försäkring, with Lassie acting as an intermediary in that regard.
The pet insurance space is certainly ripe for innovation, with traditional policies often inadequate and confusing, and this is clear in the fact that Lassie is the highest rated pet insurance on Trustpilot. Recent Series B funding will be used to develop Lassie’s team and products, such as its in-app sale of health products for pets, and expand beyond its core bases of Germany and Sweden.
