Who you are

We’re looking for candidates with at least 7 years of experience spanning software and hardware engineering, including prior leadership responsibilities. Reporting to the Director of Control Systems & Software, you’ll collaborate closely with a talented group of engineers and physicists to shape the future of computing
MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, or related field
5+ years of post-degree experience as a hardware engineer
2+ years of managing a team of engineers, including hiring, coaching and performance management
Demonstrated ability to lead a team in delivering on complex hardware projects
Proficiency with RTL (SystemVerilog preferred, VHDL acceptable)
Expertise in FPGA, microprocessor, and related digital circuit design and functions
Experience with Xilinx Vivado and Zynq SoCs
RF electronics / software-defined radio experience are pluses
Analog electronics design experience is a plus
Temperamentally suited to work at a fast-growing, early-stage startup: self-motivated, humble, driven, collaborative, and with a high tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty
Willingness to learn atomic, optical, laser physics, and quantum mechanics concepts as required to put work in context

What the job involves

Atom Computing is seeking a Hardware & Firmware Engineering Manager to lead the development of critical technologies that power our quantum computers.
In this role, you’ll guide a team working on innovative, greenfield projects that demand deep expertise in computer architecture, firmware design, and hardware systems — along with the creativity to push beyond the state of the art.
Lead and mentor a team of 4 to 8 hardware and firmware engineers
Recruit, hire, and retain top engineering talent
Manage the product roadmap and subsystem delivery schedules for both commercial and research projects
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define feature requirements and roadmaps for quantum controls systems
Work closely with Atom Computing’s quantum physicists, optical engineers, and hardware engineers to understand use cases and deliver software that addresses the needs

Our take

Quantum computers are largely defined by their qubit type and coherence times. Atom Computing creates spin qubits by using the neutral atom Strontium-87, which, in one of its nuclear spin states, can coherently remain in that state for a very long time, allowing computers to run deeper quantum circuits.

Qubits are fragile and susceptible to errors, but the company’s unique system yields a record-setting coherence time of 40 seconds which is monumentally faster than other systems, allowing more time for quantum error correction research to detect and correct errors without completely degrading purposeful computation.

The company raised $60 million of capital in its 2022 Series B round, and is well positioned to provide the leading quantum computing power behind life-changing breakthroughs.
