Our take

Mission Zero is a UK-based company that develops machines to remove carbon dioxide from the air, in a process known as direct air capture (DAC). DAC promises to create a more circular carbon economy by capturing carbon and recycling it, but a major challenge for the technology is that the capture process itself can be very energy intensive.

This is where Mission Zero steps in, with a two-step process that works by capturing CO2 in a water-based solvent and then using electrolysis to separate it from the water. This approach has the potential to use 3-5x less energy than other established DAC technologies - a promising step for the technology.

Interestingly, Mission Zero is focusing on selling its DAC units directly, rather than selling associated carbon credits. It believes this approach will require less capital and help it to achieve faster scaling, as it pursues the goal to have one billion tonnes of DAC capability deployed by 2040.
