Company mission

To form a better world by developing, manufacturing, and commercializing a new class of cost-effective, multi-day energy storage systems that will enable a reliable and fully renewable electric grid year-round.

Role

Who you are

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 10+ years, or Master's with 8+ years industry experience in mechanical design
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), specifically SolidWorks modeling and drafting
  • Proficient in component design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), especially metal and injection molded plastic components
  • Proficient with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment
  • Familiarity with mechanical verification testing
  • Experience as a design lead or program lead on a team of Mechanical Engineers
  • Experience with the design and verification of fluidic systems is a plus, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) experience
  • Experience working with batteries, energy storage, fuel cells, or electrolyzers is a plus

What the job involves

  • We’re hiring Staff Mechanical Engineers for both our Electrode Engineering and Advanced Product Development teams
  • The Electrode Engineering team is focused on delivering qualified battery anode and cathode designs that meet operational performance targets, at cost and with high reliability, from controlled processes on high-volume manufacturing lines for Form Energy's utility-scale multi-day energy storage system
  • The Advanced Product Development team leads system design of enclosures to integrate cells into an Energy Storage System, implementing thermal, fluids, and power management systems to manage cell performance while optimizing for efficiency and cost
  • As a Staff Mechanical Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in designing components and assemblies for our cells or enclosures!
  • You'll own the design of components and assemblies from concept to production, with a strong emphasis on design for manufacturing and assembly
  • As a problem solver, you'll creatively tackle mechanical design challenges and apply your knowledge of designing plastic and metal components for mass manufacturing
  • You'll work cross-functionally with teams on requirements definition and verification plans to deliver a design that meets those requirements
  • Comfortable working in a prototype shop environment, you'll communicate with manufacturers to deliver an optimized, production-ready design
  • Your design work will span a broad range of engineering disciplines, including heat transfer, fluid dynamics and mechanics. If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, apply now!
  • This is an exciting opportunity to be part of scaling our multi-day energy storage system at Form and contributing to a sustainable future
  • Lead the design of complex cell or enclosure subassemblies integral to the performance of the product
  • Develop functional requirements in close collaboration with members of the Cell Engineering, Electrode Engineering, and Systems Engineering teams
  • Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated prototypes
  • Release designs consistent with company and team best practices (drawings, tolerance analysis, etc)
  • Demonstrate design functionality through analysis (e.g. FEA, CFD) and component- or system-level testing
  • Work with vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to high volume production
  • Drive verification testing of your design work
  • Mentor or manage other engineers

Our take

Central to the development of the digital revolution is the role of electric grid infrastructure and expansion. A completely electrical infrastructure is restricted by the inherent limitation that electrical energy is difficult and costly to store. Form Energy, however, have created a reliable battery that has the capacity to revolutionize how we use electricity.

Revolutionizing battery storage is at the core of Form Energy’s approach to making renewable energy universal. Form Energy’s battery is based around Iron-air technology that currently has energy storage capacities and operational costs comparable to legacy power plants. In addition to improvements in cost and consistent electricity access, Form Energy’s batteries are scalable, portable, and safe - offering a unique approach to revolutionizing renewable energy storage towards a greener future.

Although renewable energy storage technology remains an emerging industry, a variety of competitors are also driving developments of battery storage technology. However, Form Energy continues to be a key leader in this space, bagging significant investment that will enable it to build its first manufacturing plant and begin selling to customers. Form Energy's progress is highlighted by a deal with Xcel Energy to deploy iron-air battery systems at two of its retiring coal plant sites and with Puget Sound Energy in 2024, to help the company deploy multi-day energy storage systems.
