Who you are
- 10+ years of experience in people management, employment law, or corporate legal counsel roles, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position
- Proven experience in leading cross-functional people and legal topics in fast-paced environments
- Expertise in employment law, contract negotiation, and corporate governance
- Strong understanding of people's best practices, employee relations, performance management, compensation, and labour laws
- Registered and qualified with the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives
What the job involves
- The Vice President of People and General Counsel is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization' people resources, as well as managing legal matters and ensuring compliance with regulatory and legal requirements
- This dual role requires a combination of strategic people leadership, legal expertise, and a deep understanding of organizational policies and laws
- The role is part of the Executive team
- Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and implement people and legal strategies that align with the company’s long-term goals and objectives
- Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to both the People and Legal teams
- Act as a trusted advisor to the executive leadership team, offering insights on workforce strategy, legal risks, and compliance
- Lead organizational change and transformation initiatives, ensuring legal and people considerations are addressed
- People Management:
- Oversee recruitment, employee retention, talent management, and succession planning
- Lead the development and implementation of performance management, employee engagement, and organizational culture programs
- Ensure compliance with employment laws, labor relations, and HR best practices
- Design and manage compensation and benefits programs, aligning them with industry standards and business goals
- Handle employee relations issues, including disputes, disciplinary actions, and grievances, ensuring resolution in a fair and legally compliant manner
- Drive diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to foster a positive workplace culture
- Legal Oversight:
- Provide counsel on legal issues, including employment law, contracts, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, including employment agreements, vendor contracts, and service agreements
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including labor laws, data privacy, and workplace safety
- Manage legal disputes, investigations, and litigation, working with external legal counsel as necessary
- Lead efforts in risk management and implement legal strategies to protect the company from potential liabilities
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Develop and oversee corporate compliance programs, ensuring the organization operates within legal and ethical standards
- Monitor legal and regulatory changes, updating policies and procedures to ensure compliance
- Implement risk management strategies, identifying potential legal or compliance risks and mitigating them
- Conduct legal and People audits to ensure alignment with internal policies and external regulations
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Partner with internal departments such as Finance, Operations, and IT to align people and legal strategies with overall business objectives
- Collaborate with external stakeholders, such as legal counsel, government agencies, and industry bodies
- Communicate effectively with leadership, board members, and employees on legal and people matters, ensuring transparency and understanding
- Prepare and present reports on key legal and people metrics, risks, and initiatives to senior management and the board of directors
