Role
Who you are
- Education & Bar: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar
- Experience: 5–10 years of legal experience with a meaningful focus on compliance. In-house exposure at a technology, industrial, or energy company is preferred
- Domain Expertise: Solid foundational knowledge in Export Controls, FCPA/Anti-Bribery, or Technology/Commercial Compliance
- AI/ML Fluency: Familiarity with legal and ethical considerations surrounding AI technologies, including bias, data provenance, and transparency
- Communication: Strong ability to translate complex regulations into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders
Desirable
- Relevant professional certifications such as CCEP, CAMS, or CIPP
- Experience with or exposure to GRC/ERM software platforms
- Experience in the technology, energy, or industrial infrastructure sectors
What the job involves
- Crusoe is seeking a skilled and motivated attorney to join as Compliance Counsel, Risk and Compliance in the Legal Department
- This role is integral to the continued development and day-to-day execution of Crusoe's global compliance program as we grow and expand internationally
- Reporting to the Global Risk & Compliance Officer, you will support the implementation, enhancement, and ongoing operation of our compliance infrastructure across key risk areas
- You will also contribute to our evolving approach to the compliance landscape of artificial intelligence
- The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented legal professional who can translate regulatory requirements into practical, business-friendly guidance at the intersection of AI, energy, and global commerce
- Program Enhancement & Strategy: Support the continuous improvement of our enterprise-wide ethics and compliance program. Assist with the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and GRC platforms
- Governance & Reporting: Help maintain corporate policies and contribute to compliance reporting for leadership and the Board of Directors. Manage compliance tools, including the corporate hotline
- International Trade Compliance: Support programs for global sanctions (OFAC, UK, EU), export controls (EAR), and import regulations related to our hardware and service supply chain
- Anti-Corruption & AML: Assist with our FCPA/anti-bribery program, including third-party due diligence (KYC/KYB), risk assessments, and internal reviews
- Operational & Commercial Compliance: Advise on global data center operations, including supply chain integrity, geopolitical risk, and industry certifications (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001)
- AI Regulatory Landscape: Collaborate with technical and commercial teams to advise on the evolving regulatory landscape of AI managed services and IaaS
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with Finance, Procurement, HR, and Engineering to provide practical guidance and support employment or litigation matters as needed
Our take
Crusoe is tackling one of the biggest challenges facing the digital age: the enormous energy demand of data centres and AI infrastructure. As AI models grow more powerful, they require immense computing power (and therefor electricity) to train and operate. This surge in energy use has put some pressure on power grids, driven up costs, and raised environmental concerns. Crusoe is on a mission to make this process more sustainable by finding smarter, cleaner, and more efficient ways to power the data centres that drive modern computing.
The company started out by putting wasted energy to work. Originally known as Crusoe Energy, it captured natural gas that would otherwise be burned off ("flared") at remote oil sites and used it to power modular data centres. Today, Crusoe has evolved into a major player in AI infrastructure, designing and operating large-scale data centres near renewable or stranded energy sources. It's now one of a handful of "neocloud" companies (next-generation cloud providers focused on flexible, efficient computing for AI workloads). And its facilities are helping tech giants like OpenAI handle the massive computing requirements of training advanced AI models.
Recently, Crusoe has attracted some huge investor attention, tripling its valuation to over $10B and raising $1.4B in its latest funding round. It's building OpenAI's first major US data centre campus and even experimenting with bold new frontiers. In partnership with Starcloud, Crusoe plans to deploy the world's first space-based cloud computing infrastructure, powered by solar energy and orbiting the Earth by 2027. If successful, this could redefine how and where computing happens, opening up a cleaner, virtually limitless source of energy for AI's next generation.
