Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ years in an engineering management role
- Expertise in backend development and system design, with a strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and cloud architectures
- Proficiency in modern programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or similar, and a solid grasp of SQL and database modeling
- The ability to communicate technical concepts effectively, both within the engineering team and to non-technical stakeholders
- Experience with data modeling and systems that support high-volume transactional or catalog data is a strong plus
- Proven ability to grow and support engineers at different career stages
- Strong organizational and execution skills—you help teams get things done while keeping people energized and motivated
- A people-first leader who values trust, growth, and clear communication
- Comfortable navigating both product and platform priorities—and making tradeoffs between them when needed
- A technically curious generalist who asks smart questions and supports sound engineering decisions, even if you’re not writing the code
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment and unafraid to ask "why" and dig deeper
- A believer in continuous improvement, always looking for ways to make people, systems, and processes better
What the job involves
- This is a high-impact role for a strong people and project leader who can support and grow a talented team of engineers, facilitate collaboration across functions, and help scale the foundational services that support all of Minted’s customer shopping experiences
- While you won’t need to be the technical expert in the room, you’ll be technically fluent—able to understand the systems your team is building and work effectively with cross-functional partners
- You will:
- Lead and manage a team of backend engineers working on service-oriented systems that power our core shopping data infrastructure
- Own team execution, delivery, and growth, ensuring projects are well-scoped, prioritized, and delivered on time and at high quality
- Partner with technical leads, product managers, and other teams to align on roadmaps, dependencies, and long-term technical investments
- Foster a healthy and inclusive team culture, supporting career development through mentorship, feedback, and growth opportunities
- Participate in system design reviews, architecture conversations, and code reviews, providing input to ensure technical excellence while advocating for clarity and maintainability
- Champion engineering best practices, including testing, documentation, reliability, and observability
- Build and maintain a robust testing system, driving strategy and implementation of unit testing, end-to-end testing, and CI/CD pipelines
- Act as a strategic voice in planning, balancing short-term product goals with long-term scalability and system resilience
Our take
Minted is a design marketplace, sourcing creative content from a global community of artists, using technology and crowdsourcing to give consumers access to independent creatives unavailable through traditional retailers.
With the success of sites like Etsy enabling consumers to buy direct from artisans, Minted sets itself apart by holding monthly art and design challenges which are open for both submission and voting. The ‘crowd’ curates Minted’s product selection by rating products, and Minted utilizes analytics to evaluate votes. The winning designs go into production which is taken care of by Minted's fulfillment house and the designers receive a 6%-10% cut of the sales.
Its unique ‘design by upvoting’ business model has led to almost $300m in funding, with backing from Benchmark Capital and IDG Ventures. As contests draw in more designers, the company is looking to expand beyond Minted.com and into physical retail, finding new ways to use the designs and creating fresh income streams for themselves and their artists.
