Role
Who you are
- We are looking for a highly competent engineer with a deep appreciation for the practical perfectibility of everyday, tangible experience, and a desire to make constant improvements over time. Someone who shares our standards for a perfect system: one that is built with a specific end use in mind, and reliably fulfills that need
- 4+ years of iOS experience, solid frontend fundamentals like animation, caching, and state management
- You’re solution oriented–every problem has a fix, and you enjoy finding the best path to it
- Thoughtfulness and intentionality in how you work: You plan ahead, coordinate with your team, and work together to get projects across the finish line and into the hands of our users
- You’re driven to improve systems. To you, good code means “easy to use, hard to break” and you make it happen through collaborative planning, thorough testing, and strategic experimentation
What the job involves
- The engineering team at Co-Star values communication, collaboration–and most importantly, delivery. We prioritize making as much contact with reality as possible, to find out directly from users what they want and need. Like walls make buildings that hold human life within them, the systems we create together are containers of intimacy, humor and connection
- You’ll release features weekly to millions of people. Every launch is an experiment in making astrology feel more accessible, and your work will be in users’ hands almost immediately
- You’ll collaborate closely with product and design to turn ambitious concepts into practical, reliable code
- We’re a small, nimble team: you won’t just be handed tickets, you’ll have real input into how we build and you’ll influence the future of our iOS codebase
Our take
Co-star is one of the most popular astrology apps in the world right now. Users input their time and place of birth, Co-star then uses AI to analyze data from NASA, providing a personalised daily horoscope for every user.
Powered by a balance of AI and human focused astrology, as well as a clean user experience, the Co-Star app’s popularity has surged. It has over 30 million registered accounts, and around 25% of all young women aged 18-25 in the US have used it. Remarkably, the company claimed to have not put any real marketing effort into this huge uptick.
Whether or not the field remains so popular over the next few years remains to be seen, but the fact that Co-Star has developed a new astrology machine that uses ChatGPT to answer users' questions shows its well set to draw further interest in the company.
