Role
Who you are
- 7+ years experience in a data or software engineering role
- 5+ years of experience managing a development, data engineering or data science teams as technical lead or people manager
- 3+ years experience managing teams as people manager
- Strong subject matter expertise in either data engineering or MLOps
- High degree of familiarity with tools such as: Kafka, Big Query, Beam, Spark, Lambdas, Tensorflow, Airflow
- Strong experience designing solutions in the cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Strong experience and knowledge in building scalable solutions and backend engineering
What the job involves
- As the Manager of Data Engineering & MLOps, you will have the chance to build and lead a dynamic team of data engineers and MLOps experts
- You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the SDK & technical stacks
- This includes making strategic decisions related to our tech stack, evaluating and adopting the latest tools, frameworks, and technologies to keep our data infrastructure scalable, reliable, and future-proof
- Your work will have a direct impact on our organization's success as you leverage our vast internal data to create innovative data products that support marketing and merchandising efforts. By driving data-driven personalization and insights, you will enhance customer experiences and contribute to business growth
- Lead team of 6-7 data engineers and MLOps engineers
- Hire, Coach and mentor team members. Drive a staffing strategy
- Clearly communicate with stakeholders including product management and the larger business partners about our technical solves in simple, easy to understand language
- Strong software fundamentals are critical for the success of this role

The founder and CEO of The RealReal began the company in her kitchen, traveling via van to customers at their homes to deliver goods. Fast forward several years and The RealReal has more than 27 million shoppers, 19 retail locations, and has successfully IPO'ed after achieving unicorn status.
The RealReal is an online marketplace for second-hand luxury goods including high-end fashion, jewellery, watches, and fine art, all verified by in-house experts as part of the company’s robust authentication infrastructure. With a focus inspired by the circular economy, it also helps both buyers and consignors to extend products' lifespan, bringing sustainability to the fashion industry.
The company has sought to boost its activities through strategic moves like a partnership with Gucci, which is focusing on sustainability as it incentivises its customers to buy authenticated secondhand goods via The RealReal. Also, there have been forward-thinking approaches to customer acquisition and retention such as AI pricing and fake finding. Regardless, as a primarily retail-based company, The RealReal was affected by inflation in 2023 and made a 7% cut to its workforce to reduce operational costs in the first quarter. 2024 Q1 also showed the company to report a loss with an optimistic hope for growth in the following quarters.
