Who you are

A proven track record of successful code deployment in industry and be well-versed in industry best practices
Proven experience and knowledge of Python (Micropython, FastAPI), and C/C++
Knowledge of communication protocols such as NB-IOT, SPI, I2C, UART, etc
Ability to optimise resource constrained, low power systems and devices
A top University Graduate with a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering or equivalent
Have full-stack experience, with the ability to identify problems and opportunities on all layers of the coding stack + take initiative to solve them
You are excited by the prospect of learning new languages, frameworks and tools
An embedded superstar who is an expert at working with low level systems and memory/power management
You enjoy a multi-faceted exposure to workstreams in the domain of IoT, sensor technology, embedded systems, microcontrollers, PCB design, hardware, firmware, software
You have excellent communication abilities whereby you can easily synthesise client requirements into well engineered solutions and vice versa where you can describe complex engineering concepts to non-technical stakeholders effectively
You enjoy collaborating with a small team with diverse backgrounds and experiences

Desirable

Knowledge of IoT, ESP32, ATMEGA, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, LTE/Narrowband communication, hardware automation, COAP/HTTP protocol
Experience with Assembly, RTC, memory mapped IO, OS Architecture, hardware registers, device drivers, and hardware debugging tools such as Ampy and Picocom
Experience with battery tech modelling and optimisation
Experience with wireless communication protocols, RT-OS networking, and Signal Processing
Experience with Distributed Systems, Systems Security, and System level testing
Knowledge of Typescript & FastAPI/Flask/Django
Experience with containerised applications (Docker)
Experience with KiCad, hardware design tools, and circuit schema

What the job involves

Junior Full-Stack Engineer with a embedded systems focus at a growing climate tech start-up
You will have the opportunity to improve the efficiency and reliability of our deployed sensors and embedded system while also implementing new features, algorithms, and functionality in limited resource device contexts
You will be at the forefront of seeing the real-world impact of your work as you improve the performance of our sensors, and streamline the suite of tools we build to solve the problem of flooding
Your day to day might include flashing and/or debugging firmware on microcontrollers and LTE modems, optimising embedded software for memory and power usage, programmatically automating hardware features, and improving the data capture, processing, and transmission workflows
You will balance speed, consistency and quality, while focusing on producing tangible results
You will work shoulder to shoulder with the CTO and engineering team to help us scale fast in a robust manner

Application process

Application submission before midnight 18th September (we are reviewing on a rolling basis so the sooner the better)
Initial phone/video screen (30 mins) - w/c 18th September
Technical Coding screen (1 hour) - w/c 25th September
Final onsite interviews - this is comprised of 3 portions: algorithmic and systems design interview with the CTO (1hr), a non-technical interview with the CEO (40mins) and the chance to meet the team (2 hours total at one of our co-working spaces) - w/c 2nd October
There may be an additional interview with an advisor and/or investor (30 mins)
Start date - w/c 9th October

Our take

As the effects of climate change intensify, the frequency of flooding events is increasing. However, major infrastructures are currently grappling with a reactive approach, mainly due to the scale of their networks and the absence of adequate sensing technology and analytics. This approach proves to be expensive and environmentally harmful. Recognising these challenges, ManholeMetrics wants to address these issues and provide an effective solution to mitigate the impact of flooding.

ManholeMetrics provides cost-effective, long-lasting sensors that are designed to monitor wastewater levels. These sensors are accompanied by real-time and predictive alert systems, allowing infrastructure operators to take a proactive approach to flood management. Through this proactive approach, ManholeMetrics enables the creation of calibrated models and facilitates optimised data-driven decision-making for more effective flood prevention and response.

ManholeMetrics has received support from Yorkshire Water, Thames Water, and National Highways. This support not only serves as a testament to the credibility of ManholeMetrics' technology, but also propels the company closer to achieving its ambitious goal of ending flooding.
