Who you are

We are seeking an experienced backend engineer to help shape our architecture and drive our ambitious roadmap, all while collaborating in a highly dynamic team environment
Are able to balance speed of delivery with designing and implementing reliable, secure, highly available services
Have extensive experience designing micro-services, event driven architecture, APIs (REST and/or gRPC)
Have a strong knowledge of observability and debugging production issues at scale
Have a systematic problem-solving approach coupled with strong communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive
Are passionate about upholding engineering best practices in all phases of SDLC
Are a self-starter and can lead a group of engineers from inception to implementation of ideas
Have 8+ years of experience as a software engineer
Minimum requirement of bachelor's degree in a related field (computer science, computer engineering, etc.)

Desirable

Worked asynchronously as part of a fully-remote, distributed team
Have experience in the domain of data analytics and transformation

What the job involves

The Orchestration team owns and operates some of the most critical services at dbt Labs that power job scheduling and execution for dbt Cloud
We are simultaneously evolving our product and system while operating at scale, meeting strict uptime requirements, and satisfying the needs of large enterprises
Help shape the future of the orchestration system by designing and implementing reliable, secure, highly available services, and refactoring legacy systems in collaboration with the staff+ engineering group
Work on complex systems and a variety of programming languages and technologies, including: Python, Rust, Go, Postgres, Redis, Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform and Datadog
Collaborate across multiple engineering teams, product management, UX designers, customer support
Act as a mentor to junior engineers, providing guidance on best practices and architectural decisions

In 2018, dbt Labs founder Tristan Handy was running an analytics company and created a data build tool (or ‘dbt’) to help transform data for analysis. Fast forward one year and dbt Labs was born, offering its tools to help companies everywhere transform their data workflows.

Raw data comes in myriad forms and dbt Labs’ software allows data specialists to manage the data transformation layer making its use for analysis much easier. It offers consulting services on top of the software, and has ridden a wave of companies embracing digital transformation more as their services and workplaces become more online.

Seen as the defacto standard for modern analytics engineering by many, it reached unicorn status within 2 years of launch and is focusing future efforts on expanding reach more markets outside of the US. Its recent acquisition of Transform, an analytics engineering company, will aid in further developing its product's data transformation capabilities.
